Why Do You Relay?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

As the Dance Organization Relay for Life team assembled last week for our first team meeting, the first thing we addressed was, “Why do we Relay?”  Run by our team leader, junior Kathryn Carlisle, each of us went around and mentioned family and friends we knew who had struggled or are currently struggling with cancer. The point?  Cancer touches all of us in some way.  Each of us has our own reasons for participating in Relay for Life, but we all have the same goal:  to raise money for and awareness about cancer.

Kathryn is a member of the Colleges Against Cancer Committee, which spreads facts and awareness about cancer.  I had no idea that there were so many committees within the BC Relay team, and if you’re participating in Relay this year, you’ll know from the emails we receive that there are countless fundraisers leading up to the event, which takes will take place on Friday, February 24 from 6 PM to 6 AM.  Kathryn’s roommate, junior Kim Curtis, is one of the chairs of the Corporate Sponsorship Committee, which seeks donations from local businesses for Relay.  Both Kathryn and Kim have been getting more and more involved with Relay throughout their time here at BC, and it was clear to me that they both were genuinely passionate about spreading awareness and making Relay a success this year.

If you’ve never been to Relay before, it is definitely something you need to attend while at BC.  It’s an all-night event, with different BC performing groups making special appearances, as well as other surprises.  There is also a really special luminary ceremony where we honor those we know who have fought or are currently fighting cancer.  It truly will be the place to be that night, so stop pretending you’re going to have other plans because everyone will be in the Plex.  Also, the theme for this year’s Relay is “Outer Space,” so if wearing lots of aluminum foil and dancing to Space Jam is your thing, please stop by.

If you’re looking for a team to join, there are plenty of great teams still looking for members, including my fabulous teams, DOBC and Her Campus BC.  I recently checked out the BC Relay website, and I have to give some recognition to the #1 fundraising group, “Stop the War in My Rack,” for raising so much money and just being overall awesome with that name.  There are 100 BC teams so far, and while we are close to the $50,000 mark, our ultimate goal as a school is to raise $100,000 more.  This goal is well within reach if everyone gets involved!  If you’re still on the fence about whether to come to the event, ask yourself, “Why do I Relay?”
