Name: Natalie Peterson

Hometown: Ottumwa, Iowa
Major/Minor: Songwriting/Communications
Role at HC Belmont: Writer
Why did you choose Belmont? Â
Â
I tell most I came for the music, stayed for the community. Being accepted into the songwriting program was the main reason I chose to come to Belmont; their track record was impressive, and I wanted the opportunity to study from professionals still active in the industry. Not only have I been able to do that, but I have also been able to join numerous organizations like Bruin Recruiters and TT which have allowed me to build stronger connections to my classmates and the college itself.Â
Â
What’re your career goals?
Â
That’s a big question for a senior! As a songwriting major with a minor in communications, I truly believe I will be happy in any realm where I get to work with words and music for a living. Whether that be through songwriting or something like music journalism, I hope to find my niche in the industry after I graduate.
Â
Favorite place to go in Nashville?
Â
Probably a copout, but I have to say the Ryman. With so much history, it’s hard to not love every second of being in there. If we’re talking restaurants: Otaku Ramen, Rosepepper Cantina, Jack’s Barbecue, and a new favorite is Emmy Squared Pizza.
Â
Do you have any hobbies?
Â
Writing (clearly), reading, going to as many concerts as I can, and hanging out with my cat, Marnie.
Â
What’s your favorite class you’ve taken at Belmont?
Â
Dreams in Literature was a class I had a lot of fun with. Dr. Pinter is incredible, and guided us through our dreams, what they mean, and how we can use them to better our daily lives. It would be a crime if I didn’t mention my first-year seminar with Dr. David Dark as well– everyone needs to take a class from him at some point. If not, at least look him up on Twitter.
Top 3 favorite bands?
Right now? The National, Caroline Rose, Brandi Carlile.
Â
Favorite Movie?
Dan in Real Life, starring Steve Carell.
Â
Favorite quote? Â
Am I allowed to quote the entirety of “This Is Water” by David Foster Wallace?Â
Â
Favorite Food?
Ribs. Life’s too short for a half rack.
Â
What would you say to someone considering joining the HC team?
I have been with HC since my second semester of freshman year, and it has been great to constantly work my blogging muscles every week by having others who keep me accountable for deadlines. It’s also a fantastic way to keep in touch with what’s going on at Belmont and college campuses all over the U.S.!
