What Freshman Year Taught Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

It feels like just last week that I packed everything I owned into the back of my car and drove 6 hours to unload everything into a tiny shoebox of a dorm room.  Little did I know that the next 8 months would shape me, break me, and build me into a completely different person.  I’ve learned my fair share of lessons this year…here are a few.

1. Taylor Swift really does heal all wounds.

Just failed a test? Taylor Swift.  Ran out of class during a test because you were having a panic attack? Taylor Swift.  Thought you found the guy you were going to marry and then realized he has no idea who you are?  Seriously…Taylor Swift.

2. You’re going to make incredible friends.

I’d heard time and time again that the girls you meet in college are the girls that stand beside you on your wedding day, but I honestly didn’t believe it.  I can’t tell you enough how much these girls have helped me grow into the person I am today.  From bringing me flowers when I had my heart broken to taking a 12 hour road trip without killing each other to crying on the bedroom floor over stories from our past, I’ve never felt such an outpouring of love.

3. You’re going to be jealous…and it’s okay.

The first time your best friend from home posts a picture with a caption about her “BFF,” you’re going to cry, but that’s okay. Change is scary, and you’re going to wish you had chosen a different college.  It’s normal.

4. Your best friends from home are still going to be your best friends.

Y’all, we live in an age where you can talk face to face with people through a computer screen.  You may go weeks, months, without talking, but your best friends from high school will always be there when you need them.  Trust me.

5. Spontaneous trips are the best trips.

Whether it’s a trip to Cookout at 2 am or a weekend trip home, spontaneity is valuable.  There aren’t many times in life when you can get away with it as easily as you can in college, so enjoy it.

6. Time goes by really, really quickly.

I spent so much time wishing for college, wishing for fall break, wishing for spring break, wishing for the end of the year.  I didn’t realize until I stopped to look back how incredibly fast it went by.  Take time to soak things in…you can thank me later.
