I have always been a Harry Potter fan. When “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” was first announced, I was so happy that the wizarding world was not coming to a close. Iām still so glad that Rowling decided to continue writing but, Joanne, Iāve got some concerns about “The Crimes of Grindelwald.”
Ā
McGonagall is there?
Ā
According to a section on Pottermore that has since been taken down, the ever esteemed Minerva McGonagall was born in 1935. She also, in The Order of the Phoenix, says that she had been working at Hogwarts for nearly 39 years, making her start date be in 1956. So what, pray tell, is she doing working at Hogwarts in 1927 when this movie takes place. Even McGonagall is not capable of being a teacher when she is *negative eight years old*.
Ā
Nagini also makes an appearance?
Ā
This is not the first time that Rowling has been criticized for how she brings diverse representation into her narratives. Is having an Asian character play someone with a blood curse racist? Probably. This isnāt my only question regarding Nagini. Because, you know, itās Nagini! She certainly plays a major role in some later movies so ummā¦how does that even happen??
Ā
Most magic is visible now?
Ā
Iām always one for learning more spells and more about magic in general. Itās great to see the characters perform new spells, and I love seeing some of our old faves come back into play as well. However, we donāt usually see much visual representation of these spells other than, say, a flash of green light or so. Why is it that now we see more, such as when Newt is taking the spell off of Jacob and it creates a huge, cartoon-esque heart above his head?
Ā
Is the Lestrange family line done?
Ā
Ā
From what the characters related to the Lestrange family line have to say, it seems like they are the end of this prestigious line of pureblood wizards. But this surely canāt be the case as one of our favorite Death Eaters and a member of the nobleĀ house of Black marries into the Lestrange family.
Ā
Dumbledoreās clothing choices
A valid question that I also have. According to Rowlingās Twitter, or at least a tweet that she re-tweeted, the answer is: tenure.
Ā
Dumbledore did not age well
Ā
Remember when we saw Dumbledore back when Tom Riddle was a student in the ā40ās? And remember how he very much looked like the Dumbledore of the modern movies, aka an Old Man? And how he looks *nothing* like Jude Law? Mustāve been a rough couple of years dealing with Grindelwald.
Ā
Dumbledore being into that Grindelwald
Ā
Speaking of Grindelwald…Ā Because of the scathing book that Rita Skeeter wrote about Dumbledore, we all know that he and Grindelwald were *very close. I am all for this representation, my only complaint is that Jude Law Dumbledore is GORGEOUS and Johnny Depp Grindelwald is very creepy. Why are they in love?Ā How could Dumbledore love him?Ā Also, come on Rowling, I want more explicit relationship between them… You kept it from us for years that Dumbledore was gay, this is the least that you could do.
*Read āgay loversā
Ā
Ā
The ending
Ā
Obviously Iām upset about the ending. Credenceās identity. How Grindelwald says his āBROTHERā is wanting to kill him. How on Earth does Grindelwald know all of this but more importantly, if you look at a timeline of when Kendra Dumbledore died, Percival Dumbledore was sentenced to Azkaban, and when Leta would have been making that journey across the Atlantic it simply does not make any sense. Get it together Rowling, stop torturing us like this.
Ā
All this being said, I am eagerly counting down the days until the next movie comes out and sincerely hoping that it will help smooth out some of these issues.
