Yes, you read that title correctly. Last semester I had a class every day, Monday through Thursday, at 8 AM. When I told most people about my 8 AMs, they always assumed I had a day off—usually Thursday—but that was not the case.
As a person who likes to get things over with earlier in the day, 8 AMs were ideal. However, by midterms, they got old rather quickly. Many people assume that 8 AMs are horrible—and though they are definitely tiresome, they do come with their share of benefits.
Â
The perks of 8 AMs:
-
You can be done with your day as early as 9:30 AM, which leaves you plenty of time to do anything (including many, many long naps).
-
My classes were done by 2 PM at the latest every day, which meant no night bombs.
-
You can set just one alarm at the beginning of the year and never have to worry about what day of the week it is—because no matter what, you have to wake up early!
-
And, as a result, your sleep schedule is more on track—and your sleep cycle becomes more regular.
Â
Some negatives of 8 AMs:
-
You become sleep deprived very quickly.
-
…By Thursday afternoon, the lack of sleep really hits you.
-
Waking up early. Every. Single. Day.
-
The dreaded Monday feeling has become every single day of the week for you
-
When people complain about not being able to sleep in because they had an 11:00 class, and you’re just like:
Ultimately, would I do it again? Personally, probably not—and I now feel blessed to only have one 8 AM this semester.
