Makeup Tips and Tricks for Beginners
Trying to get into makeup? Here are three of the best tips that I’ve learned along the way that I wish someone had told me when I was first getting started with makeup!
Tip #1: Getting Started… Go To YouTube!
One of the main ways I really learned how to apply makeup properly was from watching a ton of YouTube beauty tutorials. Over time, I started to find some of my favorite YouTubers who wear makeup similar to my own personal style. Below I have made a list of some of my top beauty YouTubers to watch if you are looking for some super helpful tutorials and recommendations:
1. Laura Lee
Yes, I know she was super controversial a while ago, but most people have since moved on. Also, I’m watching for the makeup, and Laura Lee’s videos are where I have learned the bulk of my makeup application techniques. Until I started watching Laura’s videos, I barely applied eyeshadow because I had no clue what I was doing. Now, I wear some pretty crazy and colorful eyeshadow on a daily basis because it’s my favorite!
2. Casey Holmes
Probably my number one favorite beauty YouTuber at the moment, Casey Holmes gives amazing recommendations. Although she posts some videos other than just makeup tutorials and product recommendations, she posts enough that I still say subscribing to her is worth it. Her tutorials are easy and straightforward, and she is pretty versatile in the kinds of looks she does on her channel.
3. Kathleen Lights
Not all of Kathleen’s videos are about makeup, however, the ones that are makeup-related are great to learn from. I watch Kathleen mainly because of her eyeshadow application techniques. She creates some of the most beautiful looks and is really easy to follow when you are watching her tutorials. Even if you aren’t ready to jump into super bright and bold eyeshadow looks, Kathleen is still great to watch for beauty recommendations and just for some fun makeup inspiration!
4. Jaclyn Hill
Jaclyn’s tutorials are some of the best. Her channel is full of all different kinds of makeup videos, and from product recommendations to favorites videos to full-on tutorials, there is definitely something there for anyone who is trying to get into makeup and learn how to do it right. A month ago, Jaclyn even posted a great video tutorial on how to apply makeup without looking cakey, which is a mistake even long-time makeup wearers make.
5. RachhLoves
Finally, a newer channel that I’ve been watching is RachhLoves; her channel is pretty much all beauty and makeup videos, and I love her tutorials. She does full-day wear tests of a bunch of new makeup as well, which is super helpful when you are trying to get into makeup and find out what products will actually last. There are a ton of product reviews on her channel as well, and she is always testing out new makeup to see what’s worth the hype and what isn’t.
Tip #2: Get Color-Matched at Sephora
After watching some YouTube videos and figuring out which products you want to try, I would definitely recommend heading over to your nearest Sephora and getting color-matched. It’s super quick and easy, and it will then provide you a whole page of foundations in your specific shade! This helps to avoid the common beginners mistake of picking a foundation and/or concealer that is a shade too light or too dark for your skin tone. Trust me, as someone who did this when they first started wearing makeup in high school, you do not want to be the person who has a face that is a different color than the rest of you.
Tip #3: Invest in Some Brushes
My final beginners tip would be to invest some money into some good quality brushes to get you started. You don’t have to buy fifty, but having quality brushes is half the battle when you’re wearing makeup. A great way to get brush recommendations is from watching YouTube tutorials as they usually mention what brushes they are using, going into a Sephora or an Ulta and asking someone there for their opinion, or even going online and looking at some articles for good makeup brushes. I personally would recommend Morphe Brushes, as they are super affordable and they’re good quality. Morphe also sells a bunch of bundles and sets that are great deals and perfect for beginners who are trying to buy multiple brushes at one time!
Whether you just want to be able to throw on some concealer and mascara everyday or do full glam for class, I hope that you find these tips useful! There is no right way or wrong way to do makeup, it is what you want it to be. For me, that used to be doing a super natural face with really just some concealer and mascara, and now I wear pretty much a full glam look on a daily basis. Just have fun with it!
