My Top 5 Guilty Pleasure TV Shows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

We all have them. Those shows that we love to watch even though they may be trashy, ridiculous, or just full of drama. But regardless of whether we love them or love to hate them, there is no denying that these shows have a guilty pleasure element that entices us in a way no normal show could. Here’s my top five.

Dance Moms- One might wonder how a show about an overweight woman who yells at young girls could become a hit. However, this show is about so much more. I love the drama that surrounds each week, whether one of the mothers decides to storm out yet again or our beloved (or hated) Abby Miller decides to pit the girls against each other for the only solo, there are always plenty of yelling, tears, and drama to keep us entertained the entire hour. Add in cute costumes and very intricate dance routines and we have a winner! [pagebreak]

Say Yes To The Dress- This show may not be trashy or ridiculous but when you boil the show down, you are just watching people try on dresses for half an hour. Add a marathon of them and I’m normally watching it for a few hours. While they do add some storylines by giving you a backstory to the brides-to-be and highlighting the tiny conflicts this show is basically just there for girls to watch other people try on wedding gowns and imagine our own future dresses. Breaking Amish- A newcomer to the TV world this fall, TLC has done it again by bringing us yet another show about people different from the norm. This time, they take Amish teenagers and give them the opportunity to live in New York City, completely unsupervised (unless you count all the cameras watching their every moment). Obviously, this causes a lot of chaos as they discover many new things, such as tattoos and bars, and even start to talk behind each other’s backs. If you’re looking for a new take on the same drama this is definitely a show you should start watching. [pagebreak]

Big Brother- Over the summer this becomes my lifeline as so many shows take a hiatus until the fall. And luckily for me, it’s on three nights a week. For those of you that don’t follow the show, Big Brother is a reality show where contestants get locked in a house all summer where America gets to watch their every move as they compete in challenges to gain power and vote someone out each week until they have a winner. The show gets me through the summer as it provides plenty of plotting, flirting, and full-out fights to satisfy my craving for drama. If you find yourself wanting a guilty pleasure show next summer, this is a must! [pagebreak]

Jersey Shore– This list wouldn’t be complete without our original guilty pleasure show, Jersey Shore. This show became the most viewed series on MTV and became a part of American culture, for better or worse. And while it may be on its last season, we can all reminisce about the constant fights, hookups, and general Guido-lifestyle that was showcased throughout the six seasons. And if we ever can’t find another trashy show to watch, there are always the DVDs.
