Tales from the TV: Bones

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Instead of keeping the crime-fighting on the streets like typical shows, Bones focuses on what is often unseen when solving crimes: the laboratory. Vastly different from any other show, Bones is a great show for nerds and crime-show buffs alike. Here are five reasons why you should watch Bones:

1.    The Plot

The show centers around Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), a forensic anthropologist and archeologist at the Jeffersonian Institute who assists the FBI with murder investigations. Partnered with agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), Brennan, affectionately known as “Bones,” and her team of scientists use their intelligence in their selected fields to give faces to the murder victims and solve crimes.

2.    Bones

Dr. Brennan is a brilliant individual – her intelligence in the field of forensic anthropology and archaeology has allowed her to become an invaluable asset to the FBI and she has helped solve dozens of cases. What she does lack, however, is normal social skills – fiercely awkward and often clueless when it comes to popular culture, Bones is definitely not what you would call a “people person”. Her disconnect with the real world brings in a lot of comic relief – it’s good to realize that even geniuses aren’t good at everything.

3.    Booth

Agent Seeley Booth is the perfect counterpart to Dr. Brennan. An ex-Army Ranger and Special Forces Sniper, Booth is Brennan’s federal connection and the one who brings her the murder cases. He often asks for simple translations of the scientific jargon used in the lab which provides the audience with the translations as well (thankfully). He’s fiercely loyal to his friends and to his country and will do everything in his power to find the truth and get justice. And, he’s not too hard to look at.

4.    The Squints

The other scientists in the lab (referred to as “Squints” by Booth) are also interesting characters. There’s Dr. Jack Hodgins, the lab’s entomologist (expert on bugs) who also specializes on spores and minerals. He also the lab’s resident conspiracy theorist and is not shy about telling the others about his opinions on all things government-related. There’s Brennan’s assistant Dr. Zach Addy, who helps her work on the bones and solve the mystery of the murders. Although he’s always eager to work and is very helpful and friendly, Zach, like Dr. Brennan, has problems interacting with other people (often with very comical results). Rounding out the team is the lab’s forensic artist, and Brennan’s best friend, Angela Montenegro. She specializes in craniofacial reconstruction, which means that she is able to determine what the victims looked like before they died in order to help identify their remains. Out of all the people who work in this area of the Jeffersonian, Angela by far is the most normal of the lot and often tries to get Brennan to have some fun and get out of the laboratory.

5.    The Comedy

Don’t let the serious nature of the show fool you – it’s also full of a very subtle comedy. The comedy is definitely needed to break up the seriousness of the subject matter. Whether it’s through Brennan and Zach’s inability to socialize normally with others, Booth’s banter with Brennan, or one of Hodgin’s crazy conspiracy theories, there is always something to make you smile.
