Everyone loves the classic fairytale stories – for many of us, the stories brought an escape into mystical and magical worlds where anything is possible and nothing is as it seems. ABC’s Once Upon A Time brings back these childhood memories but with a new twist. Here are five reasons why you should watch Once Upon A Time:
1. The Plot
Once brings classic fairytales to life by bringing them into our modern day world. The show takes place in the fictional town of Storybrooke, Maine, whose residents are anything but normal – they’re actually characters from different fairytale stories who, due to a powerful curse, have no memory of their lives before being transported to our world. The story focuses around the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, the cynical bail bonds-person and bounty hunter Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), who was transported to our world before being cursed. She is the only one who has the power to restore the character’s lost memories and break the curse that leaves Storybrooke spellbound.

2. The Characters
My favorite part of the show is matching up the seemingly-normal characters in Storybrooke to their fairytale counterparts. While some may seem easy – Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) is introduced almost immediately – some are not as simple. Over the course of the show you are introduced to characters such as Rumpelstiltskin, Captain Hook, Red Riding Hood, The Mad Hatter, and Mulan, among others.

3. The Stories
Each episode in the beginning of the series is split into two parts – one part shows the life of the character as they live in Storybrooke and the second part shows the character in his or her fairytale life pre-curse. This allows the viewer to understand the motivations and attitudes of some of the characters – is the Queen evil because it’s in her nature or does she have a broken heart? Why is Grumpy the dwarf grumpy? Is Red Riding Hood an innocent girl or is she dangerous? These questions, and more, are asked and answered throughout the series, and each episodes builds on itself to create complex (but really cool) relationships between the fairytale characters.

4. The Action
These are not weak, defenseless fairytale characters. Through sheer strength of character and a little bit of magic, these characters can pack a serious punch. Whether they’re fighting the Evil Queen or battling a dragon, there is never a dull moment. And although some of the graphics may not be the best (some are even comical), the action scenes will leave the viewer on the edge of their seat.

5. The Memories
Watching this show brings back great memories from my childhood. Seeing my favorite characters embodied on my television screen immediately sucked me into the show, and the interactions of characters from different stories – for example, Red Riding Hood is a good friend to Snow White and Prince Charming – really brought a cool twist to the classic tales.
The third season of Once Upon A Time is now airing on ABC on Sunday nights at 8pm.
