Wellness Wednesday: Halloween Candy Survival Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Happy Halloween everyone! It’s that day that everyone has mixed emotions about. You love it but hate it all at the same time. Here’s a few ideas of how to make yourself feel just a little bit better about indulging in all the sweets these next couple of days!

Know the Proportions:
Ever wonder how much you’re actually eating when you grab a handful of candy? Here’s a few proportions to give you an idea:
3 mini Reese’s Cups=more sugar than in a glazed donut
1 pack of Skittles=more sugar than 2 scoops of Cookies and Cream Ice Cream
10 Twizzlers=more calories than a double cheeseburger from Wendy’s

Candies to Stay Away From:

Butterfinger– has one of the highest fat, sugar, and calorie count for candy bars
Air Heads– one of the easiest ways to consume high amounts of sugar in a short amount of time
Twix– can be considered the WORST candy to choose in terms of saturated fat with almost 10 percent of your daily recommendation in each bar
Brach’s Milk Maid Caramels-these high calorie and high saturated fat candy is as hard to work off as it is to get out of your teeth
Reese’s Pumpkin-triples up the size (and unwanted calorie/fat count) of a regular peanut butter cup

Candies That Are Okay to Indulge it (but only a couple at a time):
3 Musketeers-lower calorie and fat counts compared to other candy bars
Dum Dum Pops-less calories, no fat, and you can enjoy it longer
Tootsie Roll– less calories in three pieces compared to one mini Twix, and less fat
Now & Later– four pieces contain no saturated fat and only about 50 calories, so you can feel less bad about eating more

Tips to Get Through Halloween without Overdoing It:
• Drink water before you indulge, this will help you feel more full so you don’t overeat
• Work out in the morning so that your blood levels reduce so when you go to get your sugar fix then the sugar will go in your blood stream instead of your belly
• Choose dark chocolate over milk or white, there are so many health benefits in the cocoa
• Don’t skip dinner in hopes to keep the calorie count low or to make room for more candy, if you eat a meal rich in fiber and protein you’ll feel more full and curb those sweet cravings
