HC Binghamton Style: UK Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

For a girl who is used to rolling out of bed, putting on her Binghamton sweatpants, and running to class in the morning, London has caused me some fashion anxiety. I have never lived in a big city before, so I could just be behind on the times, but I’m not used to supermarket aisles that double as runways. The only time I see someone in sweats here is when they are running or obviously on their way to a gym (gym bag and ipod in their hands, “trainers” on their feet). Most days, I feel ashamed walking down the street in my plain jeans and winter jacket; but, since the British pound is essentially Avada Kedavra-ing the American dollar, it would be extremely difficult to buy a whole new wardrobe to fit in here in London. So as a plan “B,” I’ve created a list of things you can do with your clothes to make them more Britishly acceptable.

Clean Up Your “Messy Bun”

Pinning back your hair into a strict ballerina bun or a trendy, clean, on top of the head bun will make you look more put together and less “I didn’t have time to shower.”

Wear Your Jean Shorts in the Winter

Just add tights and you’ve got instant fashion sense.

Avoid Sunglasses

After days of rain, the sun will seem like a godsend. But, don’t celebrate too much. I have yet to see one Brit wearing sunglasses, even on the nicest of days.

Try To Incorporate Floral Prints, Lace, and Vests

These are the biggest trends I’ve noticed in London. If you have any of these things in your closet, try and use them in new and creative ways. (PS- furry vests are the most popular, so if you have a shaggy dog, think about shaving him for the sake of fashion).

Avoid Jeans

Like sunglasses, you almost never see a classy British lady in jeans. However, if you have interesting jeans, wear them! High waisted jeans are great, and if you don’t have any of those, consider tucking in your shirts because that seems to make every plain outfit more stylish.

Chunky Scarves and Sweaters

There’s not much to explain here. All you need to know is embrace oversized clothing (plus, this is probably the only really comfy tip I’ve mentioned, so use it!).

Make Deliberate Jacket Choices

What coat you choose to go with an outfit is a big decision! Think carefully about what you want your outfit to say and choose accordingly. Want to be cool? Go with a bomber jacket. Want to be classy? Wear that cute pea coat you love, etc. And never forget your scarf!

Oversized Shirts and Tight Skirts

This is a trend in the U.S as well, but it works here too. Like I mentioned before, oversized tops work! And when you pair them with a short skirt, it is a double whammy. You can be half comfortable and half… almost comfortable.
