Looking Good While Helping the Environment: 5 Ways to Have Less of an Impact

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Binghamton chapter.

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies, I know that most of you feel as if you’re surrounded by the environmentalism craze. Do you think going any greener will turn you into Shrek? Or that recycling bins can be better used for sledding? Hopefully this advice will motivate you to be styling and trendy tree-huggers.

Think of the environmentalism movement this way: we have got some serious explaining to do to Mother Nature. Let’s help out our fellow female and get her back on her feet! This is not about putting some cans in the recycling bin and calling it a day, it’s about a real concern for our planet.

Unlike guys, who can wake up, ruffle their hair, and magically look hot, we have to go through that horrible morning routine of putting our faces on and having our bodies suctioned into skinny jeans. Believe it or not, there are ways to look good and help the environment at the same time! Here are 5 ways to help:

1) No matter what hair type you have, there are alternatives to using hair products made of harsh chemicals. Organic hair care products are the new rage these days! These all-natural products have the same effect on your hair with less of an impact to the environment. There are a lot of eco-friendly hair care companies out there, some of them being Alba, Greenpeople, Live Clean, Faith in Nature, and Weleda. These products really work while adding natural shines, moisture, and hold to your hair!

2) For every college female, getting close to no sleep every night is normal. Make-up helps us appear awake and alive when we feel like death. Avoiding toxic chemicals in cosmetics is better for you and the environment. Choosing to stay organic is a must for cosmetics because it keeps your skin healthy and gives you a natural glow.

Most of you already know of Burt’s Bees and BareMinerals, who have grown popular because of their all-natural ingredients. Some other companies that keep green are Nvey, Physicians Formula Organic Wear, Josie Maran Cosmetics, and Aveda. These products work great and keep your skin beautiful!

3) This third tip excites me because it is a great way to procrastinate. I know everyone is stressed out with all the work that Binghamton classes usually require, but decorating your room in green ways turns out to be a great study break! The key to eco-friendly decorating is to buy organic stuff or just reuse old things that are lying around. For instance, organic candles smell nice, look great, and give your room a calming atmosphere.

You can get creative with eco-friendly decorating by creating a chandelier out of used plastic bottles, or using toilet paper rolls to form a cool design on your wall, like the picture on the right. I found this one on www.ohdeedoh.com.

4) Aside from decorating your room, there are ways to decorate and add style to your everyday items! Instead of buying plastic water bottles that are clear and boring, buy an eco-friendly reusable bottle. SIGG and Nalgene bottles are popular brands that you can look into. There are so many styles and colors to choose from, it might be hard to pick.

5) By now you must be saying to yourself “there is not possibly any more ways that I can lead a greener lifestyle.” But there’s just one last tip that will definitely help us Binghamton students out. Transportation! I know that sometimes it might be hard, but the more that you carpool and use public transportation the more you’re helping the environment. You can download the schedule for the buses that stop at the University Union at http://occt.binghamton.edu. All of these buses are free for students and, who knows, maybe there will be some eye candy sitting in the seat next to you (remember don’t stare, it freaks them out for some reason).

Binghamton University is a green campus because of you! Let’s help out our girl Mother Nature!

Raven Rivera is a senior at Binghamton University majoring in English and Rhetoric with a minor in Theatre. After living on Long Island all her life, she made the move to upstate NY and is enjoying the snowy weather. At Binghamton, Raven is the president and editor-in-chief of the newly SA-chartered publication, Her Campus Binghamton. In her spare time she enjoys watching entirely too much television, romantic comedies and Disney movies, and preparing for her American Idol auditions one day. She is currently an editorial intern for iaam.com and in the future, hopes to move to NYC and be a head writer/executive producer of an awesome television show on ABC, NBC, FOX, or Bravo (really, any will do).
