Being the new kid on the block is never fun, especially in college. Transferring schools usually takes some adjusting to only because you’re leaving the familiar behind and essentially “starting over.” But with these five tips, hopefully your transition from your old school to Bloomsburg will be a lot easier.
Get involved. Getting involved in campus activities is a great way to meet new people and have fun while doing it! Whether it’s a club or Greek Life, get involved. When you’re a transfer student there is the tendency to be afraid to meet new people because they’re unfamiliar faces. But trust me, once you start to show your face around those weekly meetings and participate, those unfamiliar faces will soon become friendly faces!
Familiarize yourself with campus and town. Although Bloomsburg is a pretty small town, it is always nice to take a walk or drive around town to familiarize yourself with street names, particular shops and buildings. Also, try and take a walk around campus and check out the academic quad and the buildings that surround it. That way when you’re walking to class you don’t end up lost and 15 minutes late to class!
Don’t be afraid to start conversation. I know that it may be awkward to randomly start conversation with a stranger but, sometimes all it takes is a friendly smile and a “How’s your day going.” Break out of your shell and have confidence!
Make use of campus activities. Often times BU hosts a variety activities for their students to come out and participate. You’d be surprised with the amount of people that show up and participate. This is a great opportunity to meet new people while having fun!
Explore. Going to a new school is scary and it is filled with uncertainties, but it should never allow for you to become a hermit and hide in your room. College is a time for exploration and meeting a wide range of people. No matter where you go, there is a place for you to call home. It’s just up to you make that effort in finding it. So don’t voluntarily dull your shine because you’re too scared. Go out and explore what the wonderful town of Bloomsburg has to offer!
Hopefully these tips makes your transition from your former school to Bloomsburg a bit easier. Remember, the “new kid” feeling only lasts for so long. Before you know it, you will be feeling like you’ve been a fellow Husky your whole life. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. It will all be worth it in the end.
