A new group on campus will give survivors of abuse a safe environment to share their feelings and support one another. The group started with a post on Yik Yak. The anonymous application has given potential members an open way to ask questions or express interest in forming the group without having to disclose their identity.
The Women’s Resource Center located in town has resources and a support group as well. A campus group was brought up previously by administrators and the coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center on campus;unfortunately, reporting laws would require any faculty or staff to report a rape, assault, physical abuse, emotional abuse, or any other type of violence against a student once they became aware of the occurrence. An organization founded by students was the access to the university’s resources if they want them. No one will be compelled to report anything unless the victim chooses to report the crime. The group will give those who attend a place to ‘thrive, not just survive”.
The group will meet in the Women’s ResourceĀ Center on campus, but the day and time has not yet been chosen by the members. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Alison Evans.
