What Collegiettes Can Do to Participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

October is recognized nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every one of us, more than likely, knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer. There are so many things that we can do as college students to get involved and help fight breast cancer and to raise awareness of it.

There are various varsity sports teams who have a game designated as their breast cancer game in which all players wear some sort of pink to support the cause. As fans, you can also wear pink to these games to show your support!

Field Hockey – October 12 @ 1:00 pm vs. Kutztown University
Women’s Soccer – October 12 @ 3:00 pm vs. Slippery Rock

This softball tournament on Saturday, Oct. 26, on the upper campus recreation fields is the perfect way to stay active and support a great cause! Pre-register at the multicultural center by Wednesday, Oct. 23. Teams will need a minimum donation of $100 to play

There are so many things that can be done to raise money for research to end breast cancer. Find a walk or an organization – or start your own! Do something to make a difference. I know you’re thinking I’m just one person. I can’t do anything of significance on my own. But even one collegiette can make a difference!

Meredith Kennedy, a Towson University graduate, started the Pink P.A.W.S. (Proud Athletes Who Serve) Effort with her athletic academic advisor, who is a survivor of breast cancer, back in 2011. “Every team at Towson now has a “Pink Game”, which they didn’t have before, and our foundation attends each pink game to promote breast cancer health and awareness and also to raise money and sell t-shirts,” said Kennedy. Their biggest event is the Susan G. Komen race in Hunt Valley, MD, which they have been attending for the past 3 years and have raised an average of $30,000!

This year, Kennedy created the Boot Breast Cancer Camp for breast cancer patients and survivors. Kennedy describes the camp as “a free educational program that offers nutritional and exercise information as it pertains to breast cancer treatment and life after treatment.” Kennedy also said that they “have medical professionals in the nutrition, exercise and breast cancer fields come in and speak to the women about their respected professions and what they need to know and how they can help them.” If you know anyone in the Baltimore area, the event which is sponsored by the American Breast Cancer Foundation is taking place until October 12 and 19.

Having a Great Aunt and Godmother who have battled with or are currently battling with breast cancer makes me so proud to have a cousin who is taking the initiative to help fight this disease. Do your part – take the initiative to create an event or attend one on campus to help fight and one day overcome breast cancer!

Here are just a few of the organizations that you can support who will donate proceeds to research.
