Why It’s Okay to Not Know What You’re Doing With Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bloom U chapter.

If you are reading this you are most likely a female between the ages of eighteen and twenty three avoiding studying or some other responsibility you’re basically just tired of having. Everyone hits the point in their college career where they just mentally snap. They become flooded with the terrifying questions of “is this right for me,” or “what can I actually do with this” and it really does mess with your self-esteem and make you question your abilities. You just have to take a step back and remember that it’s okay to not know exactly where you will be in ten years. As long as you love what you’re studying to do and have the determination to get there everything will be alright.

It really is not the end of the world if you decide you don’t want to follow through with your major anymore. If you’re fortunate enough to have a major that you can just change your track in then it will be a smooth transition but even if you want to go a completely different direction, like switching from nursing to creative writing, you need to realize that is totally possible. Truth be told, you may need to take summer or winter courses or possibly an extra year but in the end it will all work out. Paying for college is hard, everyone knows that, but when it comes to your education that leads to the rest of your life, it is worth putting in the extra time and money rather than being miserable for the next fifty years.

Odds are you’re just freaking out because you’re about to start a new chapter of your life and you’re not really sure how it’s going to go. That’s totally normal. Being on your own for the first time is scary and realizing you have to make all of your decisions yourself is a really big deal but you are never truly alone. Remember to rely on your family, friends, and even professors. As unapproachable as some of them may seem they really are here to better your life and help you the best they can. They have all been where you are right now before and it might help to get a little advice along the way.

It’s okay to freak out. It doesn’t matter if it’s your Fall Semester of your freshman year or your Spring Semester of your senior year, if you’re going to feel better by crying it out and eating half a gallon of Ben and Jerry’s, then go for it. College is a time to learn who you are and take care of yourself.

Remember that you’re strong enough to get through anything that life, or college, throws at you and make your life one you love!

Hi, guys! I'm JB and I am Campus Correspondent for Her Campus BloomU!
