Last weekend saw The Falcons – Bournemouth University’s cheerleading squad – take home 3 trophies from their BCA (British Cheerleading Association) competition in Exeter.
The team of 41 girls and 4 boys entered five different divisions and won trophies in three of them. They gained a 3rd place trophy in Level 3 co-ed open group stunt, and a 4th place trophy in the hip-hop category. Their best achievement was coming 2nd in the highest category of open co-ed cheer level 3 division, with only 3 points between them and first place.
Sophie Rogers, flyer for the level 3 co-ed open stunt group, said “ I am so happy to be part of a team winning trophies and setting a good representation for our university.”
The falcons commit 10 hours a week to training as well as extra time towards promotional and social events. This is appreciated by the president of the club, Anna Busby, “The cheerleaders fully dedicate themselves to being the best they can, by pushing hard through training so that when they compete it’s as enjoyable as possible.”
With nationals just five weeks away, the team have to rework their routine to make it even stronger. Coach Busby is full of hope and ambition for her squad, as she says “I couldn’t ask for a more supportive and lovely bunch of athletes to coach. The team has come so far in the last 2 years, and I really hope they can go out at nationals and be just as proud of themselves as I am of them. I think the falcons have really created a name for themselves that the university can be proud of!”
