This week’s campus celebrities are Fhiwa Ndou and Asher Stamell, both ’13. You might know them as the hosts of DDGF (aka the kids that held up the giant sign at the Nescac Finals). HerCampus Bowdoin asked them about their expereince hosting the party this year:
Fhiwa: A big part of the reason why I loved to host this Bowdoin tradition is because of its simplicity. The simplicity is really the beauty of it. You don’t always need a witty theme or creative costume suggestions to put on a party. When it comes to DDGF, as long as we bring the hype, everything else just falls into place.
The party draws a huge crowd for a couple of reasons. It might sound a little bit obvious, but one of the reasons is that people love to dance. Perhaps jaded by Bowdoin’s small student body, we tend to forget how much fun dancing can be. DDGF is our reminder.
Second of all, there is something about the mystery behind DDGF’s history that is pretty fascinating. We talk DDGF about in such a way that makes it sound like an older tradition than it probably is. I attended it my freshman year and hosted it three years after that, but I don’t know much about how it started. Honestly, it beats me how far back the tradition goes but does it really even matter? Part of the fun is in seeing it grow and evolve.
Asher (the man in the banana suit): When the party started ____________ years ago, the only advertising was a simple sign that asked, “What is DDGF?”. No date, no time, no nothin’. We try to pay homage to our roots by keeping the original question central to all publicity.
So naturally we took a giant poster of Sheryl Crow for One-A-Day Vitamins and added the thought bubble, “What is DDGF?”
Unfortunately the party was cut short and we were left without an answer, but someday soon the campus will learn the true meaning of DDGF.
