It’s that time again. New York Fashion Week has just wrapped up; the models are hobbling back to their caves, the designers are celebrating with the high and mighty and the interns are locking themselves in their studio walk-ups for a long winter’s nap. The editors, however, are just getting started. Every blog, magazine and Twitter account is clamoring to tell you the hottest trends for Fall 2013–and HerCampus is not about to miss out on the opportunity.
So move over Vogue. here are the biggest style and beauty moments of NYFW and how to make them work for our beloved Bubble.
1. Belted Jacket.
(Prabal Gurung)
(Oscar de la Renta)
The belted jacket is simultaneously ladylike and comfy-cool. It gives you an instant hourglass and works on every shape, but this year’s versions have fitted sleeves and no collars, upping the edge factor. Try throwing a belt over your tried-and true H&M blazer (wrap it, don’t button it!) for a night out or walking to class on a balmy 45° day.
2. Work-Wear Inspired.
(Marc by Marc Jacobs)
(Helmut Lang)
Just because we don’t work “in the real world” doesn’t mean we can’t dress like it. The runways kept this look feminine by pairing it with a styled coif to play off its masculine lines. Invest in a classic men’s pin-striped shirt and wear it buttoned-up underneath something unexpected, like a mixed-material tuxedo jacket.
3. Head-to-Toe.
(DKNY)
(Lacoste)
This is an undeniably daring look to pull off. While our friend from Lacoste here might be making a bolder statement than what we may be comfortable with, we can still try the trend in an easy neutral or, for the brave, one of spring’s creamy pastels. Just stay away from the neon orange.
5. Sooty Lids.
(Alexander Wang)
You are all probably sick of hearing the term “smoky eye.” What makes this season’s different is product placement: the darkest color was focused just under the brow rather than the crease. For an easy DIY, sweep a single color from your lash line all the way to your eyebrow. Try this look with gray, taupe, brown, or graphite, as a colored shadow in this case would look a little too 80’s. But don’t worry, you can bust out those blues and purples for Racer X… Oh wait.
6. 40’s-Inspired.
(Band of Outsiders)
(Kenneth Cole)
Old-fashioned glamour took the runways by storm, and we couldn’t be more excited to see that the recent seasons’ below-the-knee hemlines are still going strong. This year, designers took the look to the max by incorporating bold shoulders, elbow gloves, hats and punchy red-orange lips. Get the look now without having to buy a classy two-piece skirt suit: wear your favorite leather gloves with sunglasses and a bright, matte lip.
7. Embellished Skirts.
(Herve Leger)
The original bandage dress has gotten a serious makeover. We Polar Bears often look to the standard body-con dress or skirt to get us through our weekend parties–but no more. This year, skirts are in full swing, embellished with all that glitters. We’re sure there will be plenty to choose from at Forever 21. Benefit: they’re a lot easier to dance in.
