1910 Pub: New Way to Experience BGSU Dining

Are you looking for a new place to try with friends or bring a date? Then look no more, this is the place for you! Pub 1910 is an energetic and comfortable sit-down restaurant with plenty of great things to try.

Many older BGSU students may remember when the Union had another pub, named the Black Swamp Pub and Bistro. It closed in late 2019 when the pandemic began and has just reopened as Pub 1910. The “1910” in the new name is based on the year that BGSU became a college. It was located where Starbucks currently stands but has now moved to where the computer labs used to be. I wasn’t a student when Black Swamp was here but based on pictures I’ve looked at, Pub 1910 looks much more polished and elegant.

On Monday, March 14th, 2022, a new restaurant opened at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union named Pub 1910. From fried pickles to steak to cake, this place has it all!. They accept cash, card, and falcon dollars. For drinks, they sell fountain drinks, mocktails, and alcoholic beverages (but these may only be purchased with a valid ID, cash, or card).

MY EXPERIENCE

I went to the pub on opening day to see what the restaurant was all about. My friend and I waited for about 10 minutes to be seated. We were pleased that the wait wasn’t very long since the place was decently packed. We were sat at the bar. I got the country cobb salad ($14), tater tots ($4.50), and the chocolate mousse with fudge brownie bites ($5). My friend tried the raspberry seltzer and the cheese curds. We waited about 15 minutes before our food came out. The portion sizes were larger than I thought that they’d be and everything tasted very good. Service was good and we enjoyed our time at the establishment.

I came back the next day with another friend to try another menu item. This time we sat at a table in the restaurant instead of the bar. Due to this, our service was more lacking this time. I ordered the Vegan cauliflower tacos ($13.95), my friend got the pasta Aglio e olio (pesto pasta) ($13.50). We waited about 45 minutes this time and by the time the food came out, we were famished. We were also unhappy when the portion sizes of the dishes were much smaller than what I had ordered the first time I went. The food was good, but the meal was disappointing because we had waited a very long time for a small amount of food that cost quite a bit.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, this food option is a great choice for students because they can use their falcon dollars and have a fancier meal than they’re used to with campus dining. It is a different dining experience than one would have at the other places on campus. However, it is pricey and has lackluster service. I hope that with time this issue will improve. I would recommend ordering one of the sandwiches or salads to get more food for your dollar. Another tip is to try and sit at the bar if you’re trying to receive your food quickly.
