It’s been three and a half years since I published my first article here on HerCampus.
Within these years, I’ve been on a journey to discover myself. It wasn’t a journey I originally thought I would be taking; I thought my purpose in college was to get through my classes with the best grades I could and then move on. I now find myself cherishing memories I never thought I would make, and it’s time to take on one final task; saying goodbye.
College is so much more than just classes and partying. I was able to find friends so easily thanks to the student organizations and clubs I took part in. My major was also a great way to make friends as well. I found so much in common with those around me; it was a huge change from high school.
As I grew into myself, it was easier to make friends, and I started to like myself more. I think it comes from being with the right crowd. They say you become the people you surround yourself with, and I fully believe that’s true. I went from being a somewhat shy student to a confident young lady who speaks her truth. I grew into my “nerdy” side and found hobbies I love. I’m so grateful for the people who became my found family.
My classes also shaped me in ways that I will forever appreciate. I learned that I love photography, and I’m a bit of a genius when it comes to editing and graphic design. I never found myself short of a model for my photography classes; my friends always enjoyed getting to help because it meant they got free photos out of it. Some of my best pictures come from my photoshoots with the people who supported me the most.
As I got more comfortable with my craft, I found that I want to own a photography business one day. I want to open a studio somewhere and capture memories for clients. I jumpstarted that in the past year by offering photoshoots to my friends, family, and students around campus. I found a knack for senior photography, helping catch graduating students from high school and college alike in their proudest moments. My skills in photography flourished even more when I took my first photos of my friends at BGSU’s Animarathon; I love showcasing my friends’ cosplays!
I even got to experience a few CO-OPs during my time at BGSU! I was able to work alongside two amazing businesses to create graphics and branding for them. I learned so much while working with both of these companies. Between learning how a business works, managing files and graphics, and sharpening my skills, there was nothing that wouldn’t be useful to me in the future.
If there was anything I wish I knew when I started my journey at BGSU, these are the things I’d want to know:
- Take care of yourself. You cannot expect to perform well if you aren’t feeling well. This goes for every part of your health. Even if it’s difficult, find little things you can do to help yourself.
- Keep track of your schedule. There is a difference between multitasking and staying busy. Balance your life with school, friends, clubs, and work. If something is too much for your schedule, remember that it’s okay to walk away.
- Same with relationships. If communication can help you, then that’s great, but if you find someone or something isn’t healthy or safe for you, then walk away. It will be hard, but you can do it. Find a support group that will stay by your side in your highs and lows.
- If you don’t know something, ask! It might be scary, but it may find you an answer if you’re worried about a concept in class, where to go for an event, or whatever you need. Even if the first person you ask might not have the answer, they may be able to point you in the right direction!
- Be careful with your thoughts. They become your future, your reality.
- If there’s an opportunity, then take the chance. You never know what could happen!
I’m proud of myself. I’ve worked hard to get where I am in school, in life, and with myself. As I leave this chapter behind me, I’m excited to see what’s next. Graduating from college has been one of my dreams, and I’m finally achieving it!
To those reading this… Hold on to the moments. Live in those moments. These years can only be the best if you make it so. Time doesn’t slow down for anyone. Get those good grades, make those memories, and do what you love.
Thank you, BGSU.
