I want to dedicate this article to my mom and grandma, as they raised me to treat others the way I want to be treated. I have carried their knowledge and guidance throughout my life and will continue to do so forever.

MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE:

Over the course of my entire education, I have found myself to have very little tolerance for distractions in the classroom. I have always held the utmost respect for my teachers and professors and strive to give them my full attention. This may stem from the fact that my mother and grandmother are both teachers, but to me, this mindset is common sense.

Throughout my college education, I have witnessed a mass number of students who pay the teacher ZERO attention. As a mature and dedicated college student, I am flabbergasted by this reoccurrence. It’s possible this behavior could fly in high school or even younger years, but my expectation for college students is much greater.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re all human. I can understand if you check your phone occasionally or find yourself wrapping up a last-minute assignment. However, when I can see and hear you playing Bloons Tower Defense for the entire forty-five-minute period, you have lost all of my respect.

Why did you even come to class? You most certainly don’t deserve the attendance points.

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?

If you can’t devote a short period out of your day to a class (that you’re paying real money for), please don’t show up. Not only are you taking away from your own college experience, but you’re also taking away from mine. Once I hear the constant clicking of your keyboard, or you happen to be sitting in front of me, I am immediately taken away from the professor. I am able to empathize with those students who have the urge to fidget, as I understand this is just how certain people function. However, I find it important to keep others in mind at all times and come to a compromise when necessary.

Put yourself in the shoes of the professor. How would you feel if you had little control over your classroom? Any educator’s sole purpose is to impart knowledge, skills, and wisdom to their students. A true professor or teacher is there for you and your benefit. Why not give them your respect? Educators are some of the most important leaders in our world and they are constantly overlooked. After all, they have an immediate connection to the upbringing of our future societies.

FINAL COMMENTS:

I have the tendency to overanalyze everyone and everything around me. Does anyone else feel this way? Does anyone else ever feel like they care too much? I try and remind myself that these particular students are only hurting themselves, but I can’t help but feel frustrated or angry. I often wonder what it’s like to not care at all.

Overall, I am thankful for the morals that my parents and grandparents have instilled in me. Thank you for always reassuring my feelings, and constantly pushing me to stay true to who I am.

Please respect your professors, but more importantly, treat others the way you want to be treated!!!!!!!!!

Bowling Green '25

My name is Lenox McConaughey, and I am currently a junior at Bowling Green State University, majoring in Graphic Design! I started off my education journey at The University of Akron my freshman year, but soon realized I was missing something in my college experience. Since I've transferred to BGSU, I have felt safe, secure, and welcomed! This year, I'm manifesting growing my connections and relationships. I was originally a Marketing major, however, I am still planning to minor in Business. In my free time, I enjoy journaling and drawing. I have recently become interested in meditating and I love anything involved with nature. I find it important to be in nature, even if it's going outside to feel the grass inbetween your toes. I spent this summer working two jobs! One of them consisted of an internship opportunity, while another was a job that I've held for over five years now. The internship allowed me to get a feel of the office environment, and I was also given the chance to design a few projects for them. This consisted of designing volunteer flyers, invitations and even a new employee handbook. Throughout these experiences, I have learned that I am a people person! I enjoy connecting with others as well as offering my help wherever I can.
