Over the summer, I (like many fans of period romance) found myself sucked into shows like The Other Bennet Sister, Bridgerton, and Seeking Persephone. And I, like many, found myself desperately searching for something to fill the void after their conclusion.
Lucky for me, I quickly stumbled upon dozens of TikToks recommending The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion. Immediately, I picked up the audiobook of the first volume, and immediately I knew I had found what I was looking for.
If you are interested in strong female leads, found family, character growth, yearning romance, emotional narratives, or wit—this is the series for you.

So, what exactly are The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion?
The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion is a journal-style, ongoing cozy historical fiction series by Beth Brower, an American author newly associated with Penguin Random House publishing. Each novel covers two months in the life of Emma M. Lion, a young woman living in Victorian-era London. Rather than being organized into a standard series, the journals are organized into ‘seasons,’ with each season being a year of Emma’s life. As of September 2026, there are 8 released volumes and one upcoming on February 23, 2027. The volumes range from around 100-350 pages each, with the first volume being the shortest and the most recent the longest.
But, more importantly, who is Emma M. Lion, and why does everyone seem to care so much about her?
Emma M. Lion is a 20-year old woman who, after several years at a dreary boarding school and working as a companion to her dreadful cousin Matilde, is newly returned to her birthright home in London’s most whimsical neighborhood—St. Crispian’s. As an orphan, Emma is set to inherit Lapis Lazuli house and a significant fortune upon turning 21. She soon discovers, though, that her ridiculous cousin Archibald has squandered her fortune and she must find a way to make a living for herself.
The journals follow Emma as she settles into St. Crispian’s—a neighborhood which features gossip, a Roman ghost, and some small amounts of magic—and finds her place amongst an incredibly colorful cast of characters. As she comes of age, Emma navigates grief, romance, friendship, and a role as accomplice in her Aunt Eugenia’s plot to marry off her beautiful cousin, Arabella.
What is it that makes Emma M. Lion resonate with so many readers?
CHARACTERS
The Unselected Journals feature an extensive, eccentric cast of dynamic characters. From the eclectic inhabitants of Lapis Lazuli house, to Emma’s childhood friends (and nemesis), a charming conman, and a group of 19th-century frat guys who regularly drag Emma into their antics; there really is a character for everyone.
Though the story is full of wonderful friendships, the romantic tone in the later volumes is a large draw for many readers. Most fan-debate takes the form of arguments for which of the three main men Emma will end up with:
- a mysterious, brooding but kind-hearted photographer who moves into the room next to Emma. He’s complex, sweet, romantic, and perfect for fans of Seeking Persephone or romantasy.
- a handsome, graceful, aloof Duke who gets dragged along and charmed into Emma’s antics. Any Bridgerton fan will adore him.
- an “unlikely vicar” prone to reciting poetry, being spotted at the bar, and keeping secrets. If you watched The Other Bennet sister and found yourself falling for Tom Hayward, you are likely to join me in rooting for him.

HUMOR
Emma is witty, intelligent, charming, and self-aware. You never know what schemes she’ll become tangled up in. From a book heist, to a duel, to the dancefloor—Emma really does do it all. Beth Brower’s writing is hilarious and fresh in a way that perfectly merges modern humor with the Victorian setting.
THEMES
The Unselected Journals perfectly balance humor with deep emotional scenes and character arcs. Throughout the story, Emma and the people around her work through grief, hope, and betrayal in very realistic ways. Above all else, The Unselected Journals are a story about learning to live after loss and finding one’s friends.
AUDIENCE APPEAL
The journals have managed to procure an audience spanning many age groups, genders, and interests. On top of being a cozy story, each volume is rife with classical references that any reader of the BrontĂ«’s, Ovid, or Shakespeare will love. Every reader, from casual enjoyers to deep theorists, can find a place in St. Crispian’s.
