Even though Valentine’s Day has passed, love is still in the air, which is why today I have seven movies that are all different genres and styles, but they all have one thing in common: relationships!”
“The Lobster”
“The Lobster” is a story that follows newly single David (Colin Farrell), who has just been sent to a hotel where he has 45 days to find someone to love or he will be turned into the animal of his choice, a lobster. Of course, things don’t go as planned, and David joins a group in the wild, where he meets Short-Sighted Woman (Rachel Weisz). David and Short-Sighted Women start to fall in love but have to hide it since the group bans love. Will they live happily ever after or will they get caught and left for dead? You will just have to watch and find out!
“Donnie Darko”
After befriending and following a demon-like man in a bunny suit to a golf course one night, troubled teen Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhall) wakes up the next morning on a golf course dazed and confused. Once he arrives home, he learns that a jet engine crashed into his room that night. After escaping death, Donnie is now haunted by images of the end of the world, but is the end near, or is Donnie’s illness taking over? You’ll just have to watch and see! Also in this film, Donnie befriends and starts dating Gretchen Ross (Jena Malone), which is why this movie is on this list. Donnie and Gretchen as a couple really work. I feel like they complement each other very nicely, and is a breath of fresh air from overly-romantic “manic pixie dream” girls that are common in these films.
“Megamind”
Megamind is about a blue big-headed alien supervillain (Will Ferrell) who has just defeated his long-time nemesis Metroman (Brad Pitt). After successfully taking over Metrocity, he now struggles to find purpose in his life and decides to create a new hero. While creating his new hero nemesis, Titan, Megamind starts living different lives. He juggles his lives as Megamind the supervillain, Space Dad mentor to Titan (Jonah Hill) and Bernard the human. While Megamind is acting as Bernard he starts to fall in love with newscaster Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey). Roxanne starts developing feelings back, but if she finds out the truth about Megamind will she still love him? Well, you just have to watch and find out … or google it. Honestly, this movie is so fun and entertaining, and of course, this is nowhere near being a romance movie. However, the romance in this movie is just so cute. Also, the voice cast in this movie is just so iconic. If you are looking for something light to watch this one is for you!
“The Fly II”
Now believe it or not, “The Fly II” is actually the sequel to the film “The Fly,” which on its own is still a very great film. However, the romance in “The Fly II” is much better. This movie is honestly a pretty good sequel because not only does it follow the same rules as the first film, but it also expands on them and makes its own story. Would I recommend watching the first film first? Yes, 100%! Although, if you aren’t watching this for the plot but more for the romance aspect, just jump into the second one because anything you need to know is explained in the beginning. The romance in this movie is a little odd, but overall innocent and sweet — if you overlook the odd part. So, yeah, if you want some horror, some romance, and want to cry because of a dog, watch this because you won’t be disappointed.
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is about a heroic cat Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas), who has used eight of his nine lives, and now is running away from The Big Bad Wolf, who symbolizes the Grim Reaper. While trying to wish for more lives, he goes on an adventure with Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and Perrito (Harvey Guillen) to find the Wishing Star in the Dark Forest. During this adventure Puss starts to find more of an appreciation and love for life, along with love for his friends. This movie is so wholesome and the animation is just amazing, so definitely check this one out.
“Baby Driver”
Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a highly skilled getaway driver for some of the best criminals in Atlanta. Once his debt to the leader Doc (Kevin Spacey) is paid he is free, or so he thought. The leader threatens to harm Baby’s new girlfriend Debora (Lily James), now Baby has to decide if he wants to continue his life as a getaway driver or run away with Debora and live a normal life. “Baby Driver” is such a creative movie, and the romance between Baby and Debora is beautifully simple.
“Whiplash”
This love story is not between two individuals, but rather a love story between a man and his drums. “Whiplash” is a film that follows Andrew Nieman (Miles Teller) and his journey in trying to become a drummer the world will remember. Andrew’s dedication to perfectionism starts to hinder his real-life relationships. He starts devoting all of his time to drumming, which subsequently leads to his downfall. “Whiplash” is a very well-made film. It is also made by the same creators of “La La Land,” so if you enjoy that film, watch this one too!
