For a lot of college students, it’s easy to feel like you don’t belong. If you’re part of a marginalized group, that feeling is even stronger. It can be hard to find a space you’re comfortable in. Thinking back to my freshman year (before I developed a strong circle of friends), I had a really hard time finding a place that I could fit into.Â
The newly-opened Kaleidoscope Center is trying to change that by creating a welcoming space here at Bradley. The center is dedicated to providing a space for LGBTQ+ students to hang out, attend events and just be themselves. The Kaleidoscope Center, as well as the new Women’s Center, provide resources and a physical location for people to get together.Â
In order to get a better understanding of the Kaleidoscope Center, I interviewed Ellie Diggins, a student worker at the center.
“The LGBTQ+ Kaleidoscope Center is a spot geared towards the queer students on campus, but anyone is welcome use the space,” Diggins said, “We are here to bridge gaps in accessibility to resources and services provided by Bradley, as well as the Greater Peoria area.”
The center is open to any student Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you are unable to stop by in person, you can contact them through email at officeofcampusculture@gmail.com or on Instagram.
“The ultimate goal of the space is to serve the community, which is why, in addition to resources, we also have games, activities, and handouts amongst other things for anyone who comes to the center,” Diggins said, “In the near future, we plan to have a rotating art display that will give students the opportunity to present their work.”
I was able to go to the center on its opening day. Let me just say, it is really beautiful. The people in charge did a great job. The room is very pleasing to be in, with cozy decor and a fun atmosphere. I know I’ll be submitting artwork for the gallery wall. If you’re a member of the community, I highly recommend you take advantage of this welcoming, new space.
