Do you ever finish a season of a show just to see that there is no “next episode” button? Unfortunately this has happened to me one too many times. Each time I am left angrily wondering what could have been if the show had been given another season. Here a few of the shows whose abrupt endings made me the most upset.
My So Called Life
My So Called Life is one of my favorite shows ever, despite it only having one season. On this show we get to follow the life of high school sophomore Angela Chase (Claire Danes). Just like everyone, her life goes through ups and downs with family, friends, school, and most importantly, boys. Angela is probably one of the most relatable characters ever, and it was just so easy to get lost in her world. Besides Angela, all of the other characters on the show were quirky and hilarious, I especially loved the nerdy sweetheart, Brian Krakow. The fact that the season got left on a giant cliffhanger and I’ll never know what happens hurts on another level.
Freaks and Geeks
Freaks and Geeks is another great high school show with main character Lindsey trying to find her place in high school. She is torn between staying with her “geek” friends, or joining the new “freak” squad. This show featured many young stars before they blew up, like James Franco, Seth Rogan, Busy Phillips, and Jason Segel. I always watch this show whenever I need to be cheered up because just about every scene has a laughable moment. But the show was also able to seamlessly intertwine serious moments, and we see just about every character face a difficult moment. I really loved how this show never sugarcoated anything, and I hate that I’ll never get to see more stories with these characters.
The Society
Another show that got canceled after one season. The Netflix original followed a group of high schoolers on a seemingly normal bus ride, until we find out that they are dropped in a mysterious forest, and they are the only ones there. All the high school stereotypes are present. There’s the jocks, nerds, stoners, and countless others. We get to see how they choose to create a new way of life. With no parents or rules, this show is a great depiction of a dystopian teenage society. The character development was spectacular, and once again was left with a cliffhanger that never got resolved. The worst part about this show specifically was that Netflix announced that there was going to be a season 2, and then just never made it happen.
The Carrie Diaries
This Sex and City prequel features Anna Sophia Robb as high schooler Carrie Bradshaw and Austin Butler as love interest Sebastian Kydd. Although the show was kind of cringe and unrealistic at times (especially with all the break ups between Carrie and Sebastian), I still enjoyed getting to see the backstory on the household name that is Carrie Bradshaw. Also, I knew going in that the show was only 2 seasons, but the abrupt and heartbreaking ending still made me wonder what would have happened if they had another season. There was still so much more of Carrie that we didn’t get to see.
