The classic Disney Halloween movie we have all loved for years has finally given us part two of the Sanderson sisters’ adventures. After waiting so long in suspense for the second appearance of the excellent actresses, I found it was worth it! This article contains spoilers, so please read at your own risk.Â
The film’s beginning gave us more insight into the very early lives of the sisters and how they became witches, tying both of the movies together. Prior to now, we didn’t know about how their witchery began and what made them so evil. However, now it all makes sense, and the story actually lines up with the true history of the Salem Witch Trials.Â
New characters are also introduced, we no longer see Max, Allison and Dani who were the ones that had to fight off the Sanderson sisters in the first film. Now, there is a more modern twist in the new film, with much more diversity, which was a very refreshing approach. There are two best friends, who have to save their third friend and her dad from being killed by the sisters. This is their revenge for being exiled from Salem in the past. I thought it was a good plot, different from the first movie. “Hocus Pocus 2” remained entertaining throughout and wasn’t repetitive.
Since it is based on modern times, I enjoyed seeing the sisters trying to navigate the even more modern technologies than the one created in 1993. The humor definitely didn’t change, which was something that I enjoyed most about both films.Â
Finally, my favorite part of the movie involves the main character, Becca, getting her own powers when she turns sixteen. “Book (the witches’ spell book)” even decides to follow Becca instead of obeying the Sanderson sisters, as it had for many years. Once again, they are defeated by the forces of good and love.
“Hocus Pocus 2” is a great modern sequel to the movie we have loved to watch year after year. We see the return of the iconic actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy and Bette Midler. They came to give us what we have all been dreaming of for 29 years – more singing, dancing and iconic lines. I am excited to continue to watch both movies as a mini-marathon next year!
