Healthy Plates of Campus Dining

Fortunately and unfortunately, like Sherman, Usdan is all-you-can-eat this year.  Now, we’ve lost the ability to say, “I’ve been eating horribly, and my portioning sucks, let’s go to Usdan.”  Well, how about we just stop oversized portions and unhealthy eating right now. Sherman pizza seems really tasty, but step off of Brandeis’ campus for 3 seconds and you’ll realize it does not compare. However, There are plenty of healthy options at the dining halls if you look and if you eat for 1 (1 European that is).

Breakfast at Sherman:

  • Garden-fresh fruit
  • Egg-white omelets (veggie fillings)

Garden Bar in Lower Usdan:

  • Spring mix instead of iceberg lettuce.
  • Lean protein:
  • Hard-boiled eggs) (if you’re thinking like a health-nut you might even cut out the yolk, but that’s kind of weird)
  • Tuna (make sure it isn’t saturated with mayo)
  • Turkey breast, or skinless chicken (an elusive gem of Usdan).
  • Drizzle on healthy carbs or grains (couscous or quinoa)
  • Sliced fresh fruit
  • Balsamic vinaigrette or oil and vinegar rather than ranch or similar dressings that turn salads into fat missiles

Basic Kneads in Lower Usdan:

  • Whole-wheat bread or a whole-wheat wrap
  • Lean protein e.g. turkey, tuna, chicken.
  • Replace chips with an apple or unsalted nuts for crunchy side
  • For fewer calories and not as much carb consumption, unite the contents of two sandwich halves and use only one slice of bread

Sherman or Usdan for a healthy dinner plate:

  • Watch out for fatty chicken and beef (top place to find grilled chicken: corner grill in Sherman)
  • Make fist and measure how much you should sprinkle onto your plate.
  • Off-colored starchy vegetables are best, for example:
  • sweet potato (*fat-fighting food)
  • corn
  • squash

Also, although I’ve stressed good portioning, if you’re still hungry after any meal, you can never have too many fruits (i.e. berries) or vegetables (I.e. broccoli or carrots).
