Every well-connected girl has a smartphone device that she is on 25/8, but what’s funny is that not all of us know half of what our phones are capable of. At this point it is possible to do most anything from your iPhone or Droid, but to do so you have to have the best apps. And the best part: you can get most of these totally for free. So, here’s a gift from the app junkie in me.
Social:
Facebook– Take Facebook on the go (and don’t distract yourself during class). A bonus of this app is you can use your Facebook contacts to sync with other apps and keep yourself even more connected than you already are.
Twitter– Your ultimate stalking site if your not friends with someone on Facebook. Follow your favorite celebrities, friends, and random people. Find out where they are and what they are doing.
Bump– (Available for iPhone) Firstly, its got a great name. Secondly, you can share pictures, contact info, and documents with bumping two iPhones together. “Wanna Bump?” What could possibly go wrong?
Friends Around Me: Are you sitting around at a café all lonely, get this app. You sync your location and figure out who is around you via Facebook check-ins, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and Twitter all in one place.
Kik– Text message your friends via WiFi? Bonuses: Brandeis has WiFi everywhere. So if you’re watching your texting numbers, here’s the solution. Also, in case you’re wondering, you can tell when a message is delivered, received, or read.
Get Your Productivity On:
Dropbox: Scan Disk and Flash Drives are outdated. Sync photos, files, syllabi, and essays on your iPhone or iPad. You have your important documents wherever you go and its all on your phone when you need it during that late night at the library.
Track My MBTA: Have you ever been sitting at the commuter rail wondering when your train is going to show? With this app you can track exactly where your train is and exactly when it is going to arrive at your stop. Works for busses, trains, and commuter rail!
Yelp! – Sometimes we are walking around Boston just clueless. (Hey freshman!) Download Yelp mobile and see what around you is great. Food, entertainment, services, and reviews within a mile of your location, and from personal point of view the reviews are extremely accurate.
Kayak- Every girl is on the go, so download this travel search engine. Compare every single travel site out there. From trains, to flights, to hotels this is the site to use. Comparing Orbitz, Hotwire, Expedia etc. You’re sure to get the best prices at your convenience.
Download the App for your Bank – For a West Coast girl living on the East Coast it’s important to have access to funds for shopping and eating. Make it super easy and accessible by getting your banks app and access your bank account from your phone.
Food!
Urbanspoon: Not only does this app tell you the best places to eat, but you get to shake your phone. Open this app, shake, and this app will tell you top rated restaurants in the area to your personalized tastes.
Happy Hours- (Because you’re 21!) This app tells you the food and drink specials in your area so you know where to go on a celebratory Thursday night
I’m Bored…
Cosmopolitan– Download this app ($1.99) and gain total access to the monthly Cosmo issue and the membership site! It’s perfect for a long plane flight or sitting around in between classes.
Shazam– Hear a song on the radio that you’re instantly in love with? Hit this app and it will identify the song, and link you to iTunes in case you want to purchase it right to your phone!
Pandora- We all get bored of our “Recently Added” tab on our iTunes, so listen to the radio through your phone through Pandora. It’s especially useful to use on campus because you have WiFi!
Alright, girls! I hope that this will keep you guys busy for a while! Enjoy!
