Dr. Jones ‘Jay’ Andrews is the Director of Broadcasting and Digital Communications. He is the man in charge of 89.1 WBCX, Brenau’s radio station. Dr. Andrews graduated from Brenau in 1979 and helped build WBCX. He was the station’s first student station manager. He has worked for numerous radio stations in Georgia and North Carolina and has even owned a few of them. Dr. Andrews joined Brenau’s faculty in 2012, excited to have the opportunity to work at his Alma Mater.
Sommer: What does Brenau mean to you?
Andrews: When I was a college sophomore at Mercer and came home, Brenau was just building the Mass Communications department and I got to build this radio station. All these years later, here I am teaching again as of 2012, so it’s really like a home to me. Gainesville is my hometown and I’m doing what I love to do. There aren’t many times when you get to do your own thing in your own time.
Sommer: If a student wants to become a part of the radio station, what should they do?
If any student wishes to become involved with the radio station, Andrews highly encourages students to come by and see him in his office, with a paragraph about what they want that show to be, how long they want it to be, what they want the show to be about, and why they want to do it.
Andrews: It’s that simple to do. People think that there are a lot of hoops to jump through and stuff like that. All you have to do is come see me. We need more radio shows run by students. Back when I was a student, it was only students doing shows. You didn’t hear any formal shows, like we do now, like BBC. It was all students, talking, recording content; every bit of it. And that’s what we want to get back to.
