To our readers –
Hello and welcome to the second year of Her Campus Bristol!
Now with a year of experience under our belts, it seemed appropriate to build upon our brilliant existing team in order to take the magazine to the next (chapter) level. This year we have taken on deputy editors for each section, along with introducing more specific section editors. With the arrival of so many new faces, the diversity of views and interests has only increased. Our first week of content has been a great reflection of each writer’s individual voice. Voices that we hope to see develop throughout the year.
In our first meeting of the term we posed the following question to our editors, “How would you define Her Campus Bristol?” The response was unanimous. HC Bristol is a place for the female student body to express their views on topics from sex to politics to feminism and anything in between. No opinion is too controversial. Chatting to a writer at our first interest meeting she observed, “Her Campus is a representative of the typical female undergraduate on campus.” We see the Bristol woman as one who is not afraid to speak their mind; one who is interested and engaged in the world around them. Looking back over the past week of articles this is apparent.
Mabel Jenkin-Smith’s punchy article in support of Jeremy Corbyn is a great example of the type of opinion-based blog that we are always looking for. The piece provokes discussion and further thought – something that we would like to see readers engaging with. Our new sex columnist demonstrates that sex isn’t always as straightforward as Cosmopolitan makes out, whilst our inaugural LGBTQ+ piece is a refreshing and educational exploration of identity. There has been a gap for the liberal expression of LGBTQ+ experience in Bristol student media, one which we hope HC Bristol can now fill. Tash Patel has gone above and beyond in her coverage of the Bristol music scene. We have now lived in the city for over two years and her first-year knowledge of what’s what has put us to shame. Her beautifully detailed reviews have motivated us to venture out into the world of gigs.
We have been inspired by the content this week – as it now draws to a close, we become only more excited for the year ahead. We have had new ideas aplenty for how to increase our presence at Bristol uni and within the wider city. Our ultimate aim is to incite discussion and we would love to see more and more readers getting involved. If you would like your voice to be heard in an open and inclusive space please do get in touch.
