Women deserve to not only have a whole day dedicated to them, but also a whole month dedicated to them. Here are some facts that you should know about Women’s Day:
- International Women’s Day began in the early 1900s when women started being vocal about creating equal rights.
- In some countries women are treated as second class citizens. Some cultures put energy into educating their boys above the girls. Some countries prefer to give birth to boys.
- Women in South Australia were the first in any Australian State to vote in 1895. They had to be 21. In the USA, women had to wait until 1920. In Switzerland it was as late as 1970.
- As a community we need to continue to ensure that everyone is treated fairly – not just women. Minorities need our help too.
- International Women’s Day is a day for celebrating the social, economic and political achievements of women all over the world. It is held on March 8th every year.
- In 1908, fifteen thousand women marched the streets of New York demanding the right to vote and equal pay. Two years later, in the country Denmark there was a proposal to mark the right for women to vote.
The Timeline
- 1839: Individual states began enacting the Married Women’s Property Act, allowing women to own and retain property before and after marriage.
- 1920: 19th Amendment is overturned, granting women the right to vote.
- 1928: Amelia Earhart becomes the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic.
- 1943: Rosie the Riveter becomes a cultural icon during World War 2 as women go to work in factories supporting the war effort.
- 1954: Dorothy Dandridge was the first African American women nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, for playing the lead role in Carmen Jones.
- 1963: Betty Friedan releases The Feminine Mystique, regniting the feminist movement. Congress passes the Equal Pay Act, prohibiting discrimination wages from employers.
- 1966: N.O.W. [National Organization of Women] formed. One of its original founders was Betty Friedan.
- 1973: U.S. Supreme Court declares gender segregated help wanted ads as unlawful.
- 1984: Joan Benoit wins the first women’s Olympic Marathon.
- 1997: Madeleine Albright becomes the first female Secretary of State.
- 2013: U.S. military leaders lift the ban on women in combat.
