How to Build a Designer Wardrobe at a Fraction of the Price

I like to consider myself a ‘savvy-shopper,’ always eyeing the discount rack and perusing online to find hidden gems that are a fraction of the price. In my countless hours over the years spent scrolling or in shops sifting through hangers, I have acquired a few personal guidelines which help me curate a high-quality, classic wardrobe — without taking out a small mortgage.

Never buy full price. Or, almost never.

There are truly very few items that do not ever go on sale. Even major luxury designers typically will sell last year’s styles (which, in my opinion, tend to appear similar to whatever is on the runway this year) on large retail sites such as Net-a-Porter, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, or Nordstroms on discount. Of course, there are some exceptions of hallmark items that brands tend to guard at full price. And, in that case, it may be worth saving up for them or placing them on a holiday wishlist.

Frequent Discount Websites

I relish all the exciting deals on discount websites such as RueLaLa, Shop Premium Outlets, Saks Off Fifth, Nordstrom Rack, and Otrium. Many of these sites feature your favorite brand names — but at a HUGE discount. Think 90% off your dream jeans, that were last year’s style but still look the same to your eye as this year’s.

LESS IS MORE

When opting for higher-end items, the adage ‘less is more’ could not ring more true. When you are investing in higher quality fabric, seems, etc., your clothing will last for longer. And, if you purchase according to your personal style, you should be able to create more outfits out of a rotation of your staples.

PLAN A YEAR AHEAD

If you spot your perfect pair of boots or clothing item, keep a note of them in a journal or on an app. Then when the seasons change, return to your list of favorites and see which of them have gone in the seasonal sale and are now much less expensive. This is also helpful in determining if the purchase is sensible or not. You give yourself time to see if you still like the item months later and will avoid any impulse purchases.
