To My Little Sister: College Advice & Why Brown Means So Much To Me

The swirling commentaries surrounding this enigmatic phenomenon of college are amplified even more so during acceptance season. It can be challenging to hear your voice and desires in the sea of social media, well-intentioned advice givers, and staggering to-do lists. Her Campus at Brown University is here, though, to provide some insights!

It may feel overwhelming, like you are submerged in a pool without a clear vision of where you want to go. Writing from my desk as a first year at Brown University, I promise you – truly – that your college experience will be defined by the friendships in which you invest, the courses in which you thrive, and the places to where you venture. These core elements that make college such a special capsule of memories, learning, and growth materialize regardless of location.

In the days, weeks, or years leading up to the fateful “update to your portal” notification, remember that college will become a capsule of learning and memories no matter where you land.

That being said, I am biased, and I hope you all are considering Brown. And here are ten reasons that bring me immense joy on College Hill:

  • The Open Curriculum – It is so nice to have complete autonomy over your schedule and self-select all your courses from day one.
  • Sunny Days on the Main Green – Nothing is more exciting than warm weather reports.
  • Lunch at the Blue Room – Their salads are truly so tasty!
  • Walking to Coffee Shops in PVD – Coffee Connection, Madrid, & Starbucks are some of my favorites.
  • Morning Gym Sessions at Nelson Fitness Center – I am a new (very late to the party) believer of the 12x3x30.
  • Weekend Adventures to Nearby Cities – Boston & Newport are only an hour away!
  • Impromptu Dinners on Thayer – Especially at Beatnic or Pokeworks.
  • The Architecture – Red brick exteriors always delight.
  • Thursday Night Events – A fun way to start the weekend!
  • Her Campus at Brown – The most enjoyable club :)
