As an out-of-stater, you probably didn’t take too long to pick up on all of Rhode Island’s quirks, but we’re guessing you still love it anyways! Here are the top 5 things non-Rhode Islanders think about Rhode Island:
1. It’s not actually an island…
Is-land; noun – a piece of land surrounded by water
Are we the only ones who are confused by the inconsistency in the naming of your state? Last time we checked, you were a part of the continental US…
2. Are you ALL in the mafia?
We out-of-staters were thoroughly confused when we realized the mafia is still alive and well, but even more confused when we found out it was actively operating in Rhode Island! With so many government officials being involved in mob scandals, it’s no wonder Rhode Island’s WPRI dedicates an entire web page to mafia stories.
3. Everyone seems to know each other!
One can’t simply hide in Rhode Island. Any time a Rhode Islander goes out, she sees at least 3 people she knows. Guess that’s what happens when you live in the country’s smallest state, but we cannot get used to this! As a rule, Rhode Islanders are separated by 2 degrees instead of 6.
4. How can you call yourselves members of the Ocean State?!
We’re not sure we completely agree with Miss Rhode Island here… Most people in Rhode Island don’t want to go anywhere near the ocean until at least the end of June, but Rhode Island’s weather is ALWAYS unpredictable. Sure – Newport and Narragansett have beautiful ocean views, but we can only really enjoy them for about three months a year! Not to mention the state’s aggressive wind problem…
5. You can get anywhere in 45 minutes
It’s been said that you can get anywhere within Rhode Island by car in a maximum of 45 minutes which Rhode Islanders consider a long drive! Most of us drive much longer than this just to get from our home state to Rhode Island, but it always ends up being worth it! As quirky as Rhode Island can be, it makes for a great second home.
