Why is the time from September 15 to October 15 important? Some of you collegiettes may not know this, but this month is Latino Heritage month! What is Latino Heritage month? Well, basically it is a time when we celebrate Hispanic Americans, their culture, and their contributions to the United States. A little history on Hispanic Heritage month: every year the holiday starts on September 15th, the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16th. September 18th symbolizes other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. Here on the Bryant campus there are festivities to celebrate Latino Heritage month. We have a good number of Hispanics that make up our entire student body. Here are a few activities that you can be a part of right here on campus:
Â
Â
• Providence Latin American Film Festival/ BUSCO October 2nd-5th in the Fisher Student Center

The reason we celebrate Latino Heritage month is to celebrate the accomplishments and the contributions Latinos have made in the U.S. Here are just a few of the many prominent figures throughout history and the present.
Â
Sonia Sotomayor– She is the first Supreme Court Justice of Hispanic heritage, and to top it off she broke the barrier and is the first female Hispanic supreme court justice.Â
Â
Â
Â
Jennifer Lopez– We all know and love J. Lo. She has had an amazing career in music and film which is still going strong. In the beginning of her career she didn’t have it easy but she worked hard and is a strong Hispanic woman.
Â
Â
Â
Jorge Ramos– A journalist at Univision who has had a lot of success. Every president since President George H.W. Bush has made it a point to do an interview with Ramos. His television eveningÂ
show reaches six times as many Hispanic households as any English-language network. He is a firm believer in the Hispanic Identity and voices out his opinions on the lack of trust between the UnitedÂ
States and the Latin American Countries.
Â
Â
Â
Shakira– We all know that Shakira’s hips don’t lie, and we certainly do not need to discuss how talented she is. Shakira has become one of the world most famous singers. Her career keeps gettingÂ
stronger and stronger. She was born in Colombia, and is an iconic Hispanic singer.Â
Â
Â
Â
Sophia Vergara– Another Colombian!! We love Sophia’s role as Gloria in Modern Family. We can never get enough of that accent of hers, and how great she looks all the time.
