Sheryl Sandberg, the former COO of Facebook and author of Lean In, has been making headlines lately with her new movement to “Ban Bossy.” You may have heard of it because of some famous celebs, such as Beyonce and Michelle Obama, which have joined the movement.
Sandberg is one of the world’s youngest self-made women billionaires, with an impressive career including being a former Google executive, her current job at Facebook, and sitting on the board at Walt Disney Co. With all of this success, she decided to write a book, Lean In, which focuses on encouraging women to pursue their ambitions and motivating them to achieve their goals. Sandberg believes that her success at Facebook came because she was persistent in negotiation processes. She was inspired to write the book and develop the nonprofit organization because of the overwhelming response to her 2010 TEDTalk on the ways which women are held back and hold themselves back.
The book empowers women to create a “more equal world” where all voices are heard, regardless of gender. Now, she has created a movement to “Ban Bossy” which partners with organizations, such as the Girl Scouts, to inspire girls to assert themselves. The website, Banbossy, gives leadership tips for girls and many other groups and also is a place to share the Ban Bossy message. Even first lady Michelle Obama has shared her tip, “commit to your education, because every time you stretch your mind, you boost your confidence and add power and credibility to your voice”.
