My Story is a freshmen blog series written by our talented HC Bryant staff. We decided to start this because we’ve all been in those shoes that ached in nervousness, excitement, and confusion before beginning our first day as Bryant University freshmen. We know you are about to put on those shoes and figured you’d love to know exactly what to expect…so ready for your freshmen year?
Everyone has a motto right? Well Bryant’s is work hard, play harder. The summer before freshmen year started, my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. I had no idea what was in store for me that fall, and the next four years. We have all heard those crazy stories about college from movies, older friends, and even parents…and frankly I was scared. But I was also so done with my small little high school and ready to move on to bigger and better things.
I would do anything to go back to freshmen year; everything was so exciting and new. My freshmen year is filled with stories of crazy shenanigans with roommates, cute boys, parties at the townhouses, and of course making new friends from all around the world. Freshmen year, I lived in a suite in Hall 16. Living with eight other girls was definitely an experience in itself; there were good days and there were bad. Having an open mind and cooperating with others is a lesson that everyone will learn while living in a dorm room. My suite and I always had music playing and friends stopping by every hour. We had eight boys living to the right of us, and eight more living across from us. Needless to say, my suite was always buzzing with commotion and getting distracted was inevitable. Don’t get me wrong, it was an awesome and unforgettable time, but that’s where it can affect your grades. I took the better road of paying attention to my grades and it quickly paid off.
There are many lessons I learned my freshmen year of college and the most important to me was learning how to balance schoolwork and fun. Being in college, you realize that procrastination and distraction can become your enemy. It’s very easy to blow off homework until the last second (guilty) and find yourself doing literally everything you can, except your work. Lucky for me, I really acquired a great work ethic my freshmen year. I highly recommend leaving your room until all your homework is done. I would always go the library or a classroom since the Unistructure is open all night (hint: take advantage of this). I worked really hard freshmen year and saw that my effort paid off when I earned Dean’s List first and second semester
Going into my junior year, I can still say I have made Dean’s List every semester at Bryant. Every year, I seem to learn a new lesson about studying. My goal this year is to get my homework done before dinnertime so that the rest of the night I can have to myself whether it’s going out or staying in with my roomies and watching a movie.
I can’t stress how important studying and putting in the effort is during your freshmen year at Bryant. I promise all your hard work will pay off, especially when you can enter a Friday knowing you don’t have schoolwork to do over the fun weekend. Finding an even balance of “working hard then playing hard” is the best recipe for personal success in college.
