My mom enjoys sending me packages all the way from Scituate, Rhode Island. Located only 7.7 miles from campus, it costs more to send them here than it does to drive them over. One care package my mom sent me included the book The Naked Roommate: and 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College by Harlan Cohen. At first, I really didn’t want to read it. But then, one day bored at work, I decided to. I actually, thoroughly, enjoyed it.
The first chapter is called: First Page, First Tip, and First Days of College. I found two top tips that I believe are the most helpful while here at Bryant:
Expect the unexpected: When you expect the unexpected, you’re better prepared when the unexpected arrives. Should it truly throw you off, lean on the professionals on campus who have seen it all (or at least most of it) before.
Technology: The Fifth Wall: We get too wrapped up into the digital age. Unfortunately we are now emailing professors instead of meeting them face to face and even meeting people online, but never actually in person. This is a big issue- technology is taking over our lives and it needs to stop before we can’t leave the computer anymore. We have four walls to our dorm that keep us inside, but the fifth is technology. In order to function to the best of our ability, we need to break down this wall and stop depending on technology as our only source of communication. We need to get out there, talk to people in person, experience events through our own eyes instead of Instagram, and start picking our heads up instead of posting a Facebook status about what we’re doing. We need to begin to live again, and Her Campus challenges you to do just that.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has been having difficulty adjusting to the college life, or as a gift for anyone who will be entering the college atmosphere within the next few years. The suggestions and ideas within the book provide a new perspective for students living the college experience. Thanks to my mom, I have been able to have a full and happy experience at Bryant, just by reading a book I never thought I’d be interested in!Â
