Thinking about studying abroad but have no idea where to begin? Don’t worry collegiettes, we have the step-by-step guidelines for you to follow that make studying abroad a breeze!
Step 1: Make a list of the top three countries you would want to study abroad in. You may already know where you want to go which is great, but if you don’t, make a list. Focus on what you want to gain out of studying abroad, where you think you’ll have the best experiences, and what country you think will look best on your resume.
Step 2: Make an appointment with a peer advisor at the study abroad office. This meeting will only take about 15 minutes, and you will meet with a student who has gone abroad in the past. He/she will explain to you what the studying abroad process is, how much it costs, and the role Bryant will play. If you already have a country chosen by now, the peer advisor will also give you a catalog for that country so you can start researching programs.
Step 3: The next step is to meet with your academic advisor. In this meeting you will look at the classes you still have to take for your degree, and which of those classes would be best to take abroad. Once you have made this list, it will be sent to a study abroad advisor for them to look over at your final meeting. Your academic advisor will also give you access to the Study Abroad Blackboard site, which is broken down by country, university, and classes so you can easily see which classes have been approved by Bryant in the past and which haven’t been approved.
Step 4: After making a list of classes with your academic advisor, make an appointment with a study abroad advisor (either Cindy Lewis or Ashley Jordan). If you haven’t picked a country yet, they will help you decide. Once the country is chosen they will help you pick a program. Before this meeting you may want to look over different programs to see which you like the best and which has the most classes you are eligible to take.
Step 5: Once you have chosen the program that fits best with you, apply! You apply right online but make sure you’re aware of the application deadline. If you have any questions, the study abroad office is extremely helpful!
So now that you know the basics on how to start the study abroad process at Bryant, start making that list! Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it’s never too early to start thinking about it.
“Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.” – Andrew Zimmern
