As a college student, homework frequently dominates the priority list. With various essays, reports, academic readings and so many other assignments, free-time for de-stressing and indulging in hobbies shrinks considerably. However, taking breaks is a vital part of successfully completing all your to-dos. Taking a few minutes to focus on something unrelated to your schoolwork can calm your nerves and help diffuse stress from the day. Not sure where to start? Keep reading for a few relaxing hobbies that can offer a much needed break.

Knitting

Knitting is a great tactile activity for those that enjoy fidgeting. While giving your hands something to do, you also simultaneously create something beautiful! Although learning how to knit takes some patience, the skill is easy to master after you put your mind to it. Although the craft requires structure and focus, knitting also strengthens our creative muscles as the plethora of design opportunities offers space to express creatively. Whether you want to make a hat, scarf, gloves or just want to try a new craft, knitting is both a relaxing and practical skill everyone should try.

Playing an Instrument

Although learning how to play an instrument takes time, everyone participates in the music world in one way or another and our favorite songs never cease to evoke emotion and comfort. Whether you’re singing along to the radio, learning simple chords on the guitar or picking up a more complex instrument, music offers a path for expression and allows us to release any stress built up from the day. Let yourself melt into the blissful melody of your favorite song and get playing!

Puzzles

Puzzles are a great hobby for quick study breaks. They’re usually quick to solve, come in many different varieties to suit a lot of interests and are easy to find. My personal favorite puzzles can be found on news websites like The New York Times or The Washington Post. Crosswords, word games (yes, I’m looking at you, Wordle!) and other puzzles keep your brain awake but without pressures like deadlines and grades that frequently accompany homework. Quick, rewarding and fun, puzzles are a must for study breaks!

Baking

There’s something very soothing about following a carefully crafted recipe and ending up with a delicious masterpiece at the end. The methodical nature of baking keeps you focused on the task at hand instead of worrying about your next deadline. Gently kneading dough and carefully measuring out ingredients improves your focus and releases stress with each completed task on the recipe list. And of course the best part – you’re rewarded with a sweet treat! Need a longer study break? Consider making a batch of cookies or popping a tin of brownies into the oven.

When so many thoughts and to-dos occupy our minds, it can be hard to take a break without falling down a worry spiral or simply skipping a break completely. However, breaks are crucial tools for improving focus and finding an extra ounce of joy amidst all your to-dos. Choose a hobby and spend a few minutes to indulge in something that makes you smile. Whether that is solving the Wordle or baking a pie, you deserve a break – and a little fun too!
