The end of the year, and the colder weather it brings with it, is officially upon us. As a girl from Wisconsin, these colder temperatures feel like nothing to me, but I know a lot of people here are from warmer climates. Since I’m so used to the cold, I have some great tips about how to stay warm!

Layering. Layering is key, ladies. It’s not enough to walk outside with just a coat on. It’s necessary to be a little more strategic. On some of the most arctic days, I wear a tank top, a long sleeve tee, and a sweater. I may throw over another sweatshirt just in case. For the bottom half of your outfit, fleece leggings, knee high socks, and boots are great layering components. Then, put on a really warm coat. Scarves, mittens, and hats are a must, even though I never remember to grab them. If you do, you’ll just be that much warmer!

Cozy blankets. When the weather outside is dreadfully cold, it’s wonderful to come back to a cozy dorm room. One of the ways to achieve this feat is by piling up all the blankets you can on your bed. I usually sleep with at least three of the fuzzy ones you can get from Target. If they’re Twin XL so they fit perfectly on your bed, even better!

Heated blankets. Need to take the warmth up a notch? Purchase a heated blanket. As long as you remember to unplug it after using it and don’t let it overheat, it’s an awesome way to beat the chill seeping across campus.

Hot drinks. Although it’s not scientifically proven that drinking hot drinks actually warms you up, it’s nice to feel that way after you drink them. Cupping the warmth in your hands is pretty great, too. Some of the best hot drinks come around during this seasonal time; hot apple cider, hot chocolate, and my personal favorite, peppermint mochas, become ubiquitous again.

State of mind. As silly as it sounds, sometimes believing that you’re not cold or just embracing it can actually help! Growing up in -20 degree weather during the winter months, you reach a point of acceptance and just start to enjoy the season. If you embrace the cold and focus on the great things that come with it, like sledding, beautiful snow, and the holidays, it becomes that much more bearable.
The colder temperatures definitely aren’t a walk in the park to deal with. I hope I’ve been able to bring a little wisdom about how to thrive in them!
