After growing up in Florida for most of my life, I couldn’t wait to move out to a big city like Boston for college. Don’t get me wrong—I loved home, but I craved magical white winters and the feel of a northeastern city. Now that two years in Boston have gone by, I have realized that you don’t truly appreciate home until you’ve left it—especially if home is always cold. If you’re from Florida, here are some reasons you might miss home too:
1. Having the sun all year round.
Although not much can beat the beauty of fall in Boston and winter’s first snowfall, there is no better feeling than waking up and knowing the sun is out. Florida may not have all the seasons, but it’s always warm, always giving you a reason to be outside. Some even say vitamin D from the sun can be a major mood-booster.
2. Comfort not having to come before fashion.
When it’s cold out, style isn’t always the first priority—high wind chill calls for comfort and many, many layers, which can hurt your fashion game (even if you’re sporting chic boots and a cute scarf). If you’re a fashion lover, warm Florida temperatures are a plus because you can style your outfit however you want, without the cold stopping you.
3. Publix.
Although it seems a little silly to miss a grocery store, every Florida kid knows the greatness of Publix and their notorious subs. Publix is a grocery store chain that not only sells the best sandwiches and popcorn chicken, but they also give out free bakery cookies if you’re a kid under 12, giving you a perfect excuse to go grocery shopping with parents. Unfortunately for northerners, Publix only exists in southern states, making it a great reason to miss home in Florida.
4. Working out doesn’t take as much effort.
When there is ice on the ground and the temperature feels like it’s below freezing, motivation to go outside or to go to the gym is almost nonexistent. The winter makes staying in your warm bed and watching Netflix is much more appealing. Being in the sunshine state makes working a lot easier.
5. Always being close to the beach.
Although there are beaches in states aside from just Florida, the always-warm weather and narrowness of the state promise for a beach day, any day. And on top of that, there is no beach like a Florida beach—the Florida Keys are perfect proof of that!
