Abby’s Weekly Music Review— BENEE, Billie Eilish, and More

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

The amazing new music just doesn’t stop! With new albums, new covers, and new singles, check out my favorites from this week.

Hey u x by BENEE

At long last! One of my previously flagged artists to watch, BENEE, has finally graced us with her first debut album. While I had worried that her EP might have been a one-off, her new album Hey u x proves that BENEE is here to stay. While this project doesn’t have as coherent of a sound as her EP does, the new release has something for everyone. BENEE’s energy ranges from upbeat, quirky tunes like “Snail,” to groovy tracks like “Kool,” to reflective, slower songs like “C U.” BENEE doesn’t shy away from features either, boasting collaborations with artists like Grimes and Gus Dapperton. Ultimately, however, BENEE’s strength is in her lyrical creativity and sense of self. These thirteen tracks perfectly encapsulate the young singer’s sound and energy. I might not love all of the songs on this release, but there is something to be said for having a distinguishable sound as an artist. BENEE nails this, attesting to the fact that she’s not just a one-hit-wonder.

“Iris” (The Goo Goo Dolls) Cover by Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers

On November 3rd, Phoebe Bridgers tweeted “if trump loses I will cover iris by the goo goo dolls.” And boy, is it a good thing he lost. Fulfilling her promise with the help of Maggie Rogers, the two iconic singers somehow made a sad song just THAT much sadder. Their voices blend sweetly on the chorus of “Iris,” producing beautiful and somber harmonies that you can’t help but listen to over and over. The track was only available on Bandcamp for 24 hours, with 100% of the proceeds going to Fair Fight, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting fair elections in Georgia. You might have to bootleg the mp3 to get access to this one now, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

“Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish has been pretty quiet on social media throughout quarantine, reportedly taking time to focus on herself and her music. The young singer showed us the fruits of her labor on Thursday with the release of her new single, “Therefore I Am.” The Descartes-inspired track is gritty and badass, Eilish taking a dig at her haters and making a banger in one fell swoop. The song feels similar to previous tracks “copycat” and “you should see me in a crown” in its undeniable confidence and swagger. The lyrical creativity is insane, pairing well with Billie’s talk-singing we’ve heard on previous tracks. The beat goes HARD too. Eilish also released a self-produced music video for the single, which features her running around an empty mall, snagging food from different fast-food stands. Billie’s singles rarely disappoint, and this release is no exception.

Tune in again next Sunday to hear my opinions on next week’s new releases.
