A Bostonian’s Guide to Marathon Monday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Marathon Monday is a sacred holiday for many people in Boston. People from all around the world and across the United States come to Boston to celebrate this holiday. This is something everyone looks forward to. Classes are canceled and the warm weather is approaching. For many, including students, this is the best day of the year. Here are some tips for Boston’s Marathon Monday!

1. Drink plenty of water.

Even if you’re not running the marathon, it is important to drink plenty of water this day. You’re most likely going to be walking around all day following the marathon route or meeting up with friends.

2. Plan your route home.

If you plan on drinking, this is especially important because you don’t want to be stuck somewhere and not know where to go. The roads are going to be crowded and some routes may be blocked off, so make sure you plan accordingly.

3. Stay with friends.

Make sure you stick with a group of friends. Get all of their numbers and make sure you know where they are at all times. Don’t drift away from the group. This is an easy day for you to get lost in the crowd and it can get really overwhelming at times, especially if you are by yourself.

4. Expect delays.

The T is going to be packed, Ubers and Lyfts will probably be really expensive, and the roads are going to be packed with cars. Make sure you plan accordingly and considering estimating a later time than usual arrival.

5. Eat before you drink.

Make sure you eat a fully balanced meal before you begin drinking. Eating can slow down the absorption of alcohol. You’re probably going to be walking a lot and drinking, so eating a good meal before and throughout the day will be extremely helpful.

6. Wear good walking shoes.

Even if you are not going to be running, you’re probably going to be walking a lot. Having good and supportive shoes are very important. Especially since you’re going to be walking all over Boston and you don’t want to be wearing flimsy flip-flops in the dirty city.

Hopefully, this guide to Marathon Monday was helpful to you. It is really important to stay alert and bring all the right things with you. Have fun and make sure to stay safe throughout the day, things can and will get crazy.
