A Collegiette’s Guide to Staying Organized

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Staying organized is most likely going to be your biggest struggle in college. If you’re not too careful, things could get bad. But don’t fret! Here are five tips that’ll ensure you stay on top of everything.

1. Plan things ahead of time

Spend time each week or every other week planning what you want to get finished. Look over the assignments, projects and papers you have for the next couple of days and tackle the ones that need to be done before others. Try using a calendar to give you a visual perspective of what you need to do. Once you are finished, cross the assignment off and move on to the next one.

2. Be motivated and remain calm

We will all get to the point where we just want to give up because everything seems to be falling apart. These are the times when you really need to try your best to maintain a positive attitude. Take a deep breathe and tell yourself that you will get through it all. Make sure to take things step by step so you will not miss anything that could potentially make you more stressed later on.

3. Use social media blocking apps

Social media could be the worst distraction when you need to get things done. If you can, try your best not to surf the web. If that is too difficult for you, there are many apps out there such as SelfControl that can prevent you from accessing Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. You will instantly notice how much you can get finished when you are not wasting time online.

4. Stay clean

Keeping your room and desk clean and organized can go a long way. If your desk is clean, you will know where everything is. You will no longer stress every time you think you’ve lost something. If your closet is clean, you will also take less time in the morning to pick out your outfits. Just make it easier on yourself!

5. Do NOT Procrastinate

We are all guilty of this, and procrastination really does become a terrible habit. You should instead continue to convince yourself that the sooner you get things finished, the more free time you will have for later. When you get things over with, you will no longer need to worry about them later on.
