On Wednesday’s from 12-2pm, you can find this week’s campus celebrity in the comforts of the WTBU recording studio. Natalie Landau is one of the DJ’s of the popular student-run radio show, ‘Alternative to What?!?’
Natalie (CAS’15) and her fellow DJ’s, Anneliese Scheck, Hanna Klein and Meghan McCormick, started the radio show last year. This student-run radio show is the perfect combination of genres and artists. Natalie said “my favorite part about our show is that each one of our DJ’s brings something a little different to the air.”
So, how did Natalie, who’s double majoring in Sociocultural Anthropology and Archaeology, become a DJ of her own show? Natalie said she heard about the opportunities of WTBU from her roommate freshman year and she was eager to get involved. When asked if she was nervous about her first on-air show, Natalie said that “I wasn’t really too nervous because I spent my first semester as an intern on another show, and my DJ’s were really great about teaching me how to run the boards and set everything up, and they let me play music and take part in their talk breaks.”
The music ranges from oldies to 90’s pop to current indie and alternative rock bands. Natalie said that their station loves to play “bands from overseas, especially the UK and Australia!”
Natalie’s favorite playlist was their Valentines Day playlist, which was a huge success. The songs were love related, but not at all lovey-dovey! Playlists that day included songs from The Beatles, Alabama Shakes, Elton John, Locksley, Muse, and Paolo Nutini.
‘Alternative to What?!?’ radio show is quirky and entertaining! Their playlists are perfectly chosen and the talk breaks are jam-packed with great conversation to enliven any mid-afternoon blues.
Natalie hopes to continue airing ‘Alternative to What?!?’ next year. As for now, you can tune into this great station on 89.3 FM, 640 AM, on BU Cable Channel 6, or live on the show’s website, www.wtburadio.org.
So make sure to tune in every week to hear the best of music and listen to Natalie and her fellow DJ’s dish out what’s on their mind. I, for one, know exactly what I will be listening to in between my classes this upcoming Wednesday!
