Fall Sweaters Under $50 (And How to Wear Them!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

This season, it is all about layering. Layering stacks of bracelets, layering socks to stay warm, and most importantly, layering those shirts and sweaters. When getting dressed, the final step of adding a sweater can make an outfit either instantly comfy or extra classy. For us college students, the perfect solution to those Monday morning blues is throwing on the biggest oversized knit sweater we can find and going to class. Here are some stylish tips on how to wear those oversized sweaters this fall (and where to buy them for under 50 dollars!)

1. The oversized sweater: The key to this look is to find the most basic slouch knit sweater that is loose and can easily fit over any t-shirt or long sleeve shirt. Sweaters like the purple Madewell ‘ex-boyfriend’ sweater, the orange soft dolman sweater from Forever 21, and the striped sweater from Urban Outfitters are easy and affordable solutions to achieving the comfy, yet chic look. Layer them with a colorful scarf to add a pop of color.

2. The short sleeve sweater: Yes, although short sleeved, these sweaters can still keep one warm. Easy solution: throw a long sleeve shirt under and you’re covered. Try sweaters like Forever 21’s beige cable knit or the Old Navy white turtleneck sweater this fall before you switch to full coverage on the sleeves for the cold winter.

3. The colorful/patterned sweater: Many times you think that if a sweater has sequins or patterns you don’t need to add anything to it, but always go for more! Layer a fun sequin sweater, like the one below from Forever 21 with a colored tank top. And for the the Aztec patterned sweater from Forever 21, try a button down shirt under to make it more formal. This season when it comes to sweaters: more is more!

1. Striped sweater, Urban Outfitters $40.00
2. Cable Knit Sweater, Forever 21 $17.80
3. Elbow Patch pullover, Urban Outfitters $30.00
4. Dolman Sweater, Forever 21 $14.50
5. Ex-boyfriend Sweater, Madewell $50.00
6. Aztec Sweater, Forever 21 $19.80
7. Sequined Sweater, Forever 21 29.80
8. Cowlneck sweater, Old Navy $29.00
