Five Things Easier Than BU Housing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

The time of year has just passed — where the stress of picking your room for the next year has subsided, and you’re left with a residential assignment to either the place of your dreams (StuVis) or your worst nightmare (Warren). If you’re like me, your number left you stranded with only two choices. You start to wonder what life would be like if you had gotten pulled into StuVi, or whether you’ll ever see your friends now that you’ve ended up in the furthest corner of east campus. Summer Swap is your only hope, and even then, you’re still not sure how BU housing actually works. Here’s my take on activities that are not quite as difficult as picking a place to live at BU.

1) Chem 101

All right, pre-med kids. I hear your suffering loud and clear, but it’s your own choice to put yourself through the mess that is Chem 101. Piazza seems like a magical website of hugs and sunshine compared to the BU housing portal.

2) Finding a table during lunch rush at GSU

Though this seems practically impossible, it has been done. I do not know why I continuously have the hope that I will find a big booth for my friends and I at noon in the GSU, but I will continue to possess that hope along with continuing to get my Basho sushi. As for BU housing, I no longer have any hope and plan to live in Questrom Starbucks.

3) Scheduling your classes…when you’re the last time slot

Though I have been screwed over not only in the housing lottery but also in class registration, the pang of panic I feel at class registration lessens slightly when I realize that at least I’m not cramming to get into any hardcore math and science classes (Thank you, COM requirements). I can only imagine the struggle of trying to reserve that suite in StuVi 2.

4) Not spending money on Newbury Street

Clothes. Food. Coffee. Books. Walking on Newbury Street is essentially just handing over my debit card to every single store I pass. I only feel slight restraint when I’m confronted with the potential math of my spending, and even then I still pull the trigger on my savings. However, it’s still easier to walk past Forever21 during a sale than it is to find a Bay State Road brownstone.

5) Having fun at a BC party

Excuse me, what even are the Mods???? Only in first semester have I journeyed to BC for anything, and let me tell you, being visually attacked with an array of Hawaiian shirts and khakis did not scream party to me. I do not need to go to the place where the T dies. Even so, I could still amuse myself by joking about their Beanpot loss. BU housing will never amuse me.

So, while the stress of housing has stopped, and though I am not living in freshman dorms (thank God), I still would appreciate a little bit more clarity on that thing we call the “housing portal” for BU. Until then, I pray for that nice off-campus apartment or a pull-in into StuVi.
