The Freshman Files: Why Warren is the Place to Be

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

On paper, the logistics of Warren Towers makes it every parent’s ideal freshmen dormitory. It’s safe, governed by rules, houses over 14,000 freshmen, and is centrally located to the main schools and colleges. It offers same-sex floors, Communication major floors, quiet rooms, music rooms, and caters to a lot of incoming different personalities. Warren was the place my parents felt the most comfortable with me living on my own, and for this exact reason, I was hesitant to choose it. In the event of leaving home, I wanted to live on my own and have complete control over my life, and what I saw in Warren Towers was an extended version of high school.

But over the weeks and months, Warren Towers would prove me and my initial impression wrong. The convenience of its central location would prove a vital element to my experiences with an 8 a.m. class, where I always had the freedom to go back to my room and nap after, instead of being stuck a mile away from the comforts of my bed. The comforts of an in-house dining hall made it tempting to never leave the building on the weekends or in a blizzard, and if I wanted to treat myself, I could venture to Starbucks, Subway, or City Convenience, all of which by the way, are attached to the building. I was never too far from any of my classes, and the GSU and library were only a 5-minute venture away.

What makes the Warren experience even more extraordinary, is the fact that there’s a good chance you’re floors away, or at most, a tower away, from your newly formed circle of friends or classmates. Meeting up for a group project in the study room is easier with everyone living under one roof. Every weekend has the potential to feel like a huge sleepover, where you indulge in the fried treats at Late Night, a movie-night in the common room and breakfast the next afternoon in your pajamas. Immersing yourself in the family-like atmosphere of your floor is one of the best dynamics that you have, since the memories you make on your freshman floor are what shapes your future outlook of college. You always have the choice to either isolate yourself or immerse yourself with the family-like atmosphere of your floor.

One of the greatest advantages is the laundry room, where you can combine more than one load of clothes in the large dryers if you’re a cheapskate like me! This makes the experience of doing laundry for the first time less terrifying, especially when you are with others who are just as confused as you are by the language of clothing labels. And with about four peaceful locations to study on the fourth floor, you can easily get lost in your studies while you wait for your laundry to finish, without ever having to brace the bitter cold for a trip to the library.

I find that at the end of my experience at Warren Towers, I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. With the familiarity of the personnel, the RAs, and your peers it’s hard not to feel the freshmen camaraderie and the knowledge that you are in this college ride together. This makes leaving home all the more easier and assimilating to the idea of living on your own. For the complete freshmen experience, Warren Towers is the best place to fulfill your initiation into the Boston University sphere.
